3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 TAR (2236) - Lafayette, USA - AUG 14, 2004
cask-conditioned; gravity: Inky chestnut. Quickly collapsing tan head. Nose is tangy and vinous with a plethora of roasted barley, minerals, and coffee. Slight chocolate fudge, oil, blackberries, and pale malt. Silky soft. Dull and lifeless on the palate. Poorly conditioned. Begins with full-blown roast assertions underpinned with chocolate, caramel, and a black/pale malt combo. Muted ink notes. Plum acidity, midway, detracts from the body and overall richness. Firm woody, black malt finish kissed with a dash of yeast, wood, and dark chocolate-covered coffee beans. Overall this was far too thin and acidic and sorely lacking any redeeming caramel richness or hop presence to offset the acridness and bolster the body.

On tap at MBGSF 2010. Super smoky. Not really that roasty, maybe it could be a porter, maybe. Not bad though.

A nice smoky aroma, an OK head, and a creamy texture. The aroma was the best feature. The taste was decent.

I wouldn’t say this is weak. Not super strong, but definitely a stout to write home about. Nice amount of head, good bitterness. Their best stout.

On tap at the brewery. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of chocolate, chocolate syrup, sweet malt, and roasted malt. Flavor was somewhat of a let down -- very sweet and sugary, not as robust as the aroma would suggest. A touch of roasted malt, but mostly just sweetness.

On tap at Dragonmead. Pours dark brown, amost black, with a lingering tan head. Somewhat smokey at first, then fade to a robust roasted coffee flavor, with some hints of hops. Body was just a little thin, but very good.
