4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Alextricity (177) - Chesterfield Twp., Michigan, USA - MAR 20, 2013
Appearance: Extremely dark brown. Short lived, super "fine" tan head. Minimal patchy lacing... looks pretty nice overall.
Smell: Well, well, well... malt, scotch, and dark fruits. Maybe some traces of chocolate as well. Definitely pleasing. I’d enjoy it more if my glass didn’t have a weird smell...
Taste/feel: I haven’t had many, but I absolutely love scotch ales. Dark fruits are very prominent on the front, and then there’s a lot of malts, scotch, and a bit of warmth on the finish. Honestly, PERFECTLY balanced, since the beer is never too sweet or too bitter ... it’s just fantastic. On top of that, the mouth feel leaves a very pleasant coating in the mouth, but it’s never too thick/sticky/cloying. My guess is that this is supposed to be a sipper, but it tastes too damn good.
Under the Kilt isn’t exactly cheap (I paid $3 for this bottle), but I can’t say that it isn’t worth that slight up-charge. A truly outstanding beer with an awesomely tasty blend of dark fruits, malts, hops, and scotch that keeps me coming for another sip. Now, one of my favorite beers.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 adamjackson (1230) - Lyme, New Hampshire, USA - FEB 7, 2013
Thanks Mike! Enjoyed in a wine glass
A - Pours nearly black. 1 finger head fades fast
S - Very sweet nose, burnt sugar, cane syrup and a hint of peaches.
T - Very english ESB taste. Some grape and kiwi taste. very weird and unexpected.
M - medium body and carbonation
O - It’s not a bad beer but just a bit too sweet and juicy for a scotch ale

I’m not terribly impressed by the bottled beers from this brewery. First off, their beers are expensive. Second, the quality control at this brewery is lacking. For example, sometimes their beer explodes on you upon opening, filling the glass (and covering the countertop) with foam. While I now prepare for this when opening a Dragonmead bottle, with Under the Kilt, that did not happen. Good for them! On the other hand, there was something off with this beer. It’s aroma was very faint, and while in taste it had the background of a Wee Heavy, it also had a sour kick to it, much like the sourness that is associated with Jolly Pumpkin’s La Roja. I do not think this was intentional. While it didn’t make the beer undrinkable, it definitely made drinking it a bit disconcerting.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Kco (49) - USA - SEP 5, 2012
Dark amber color, moderate head. Good aroma. Slightly smokey with a hint of peat. Creamy mouth feel, but has a bite. Over all a good ale, but not the best, Scottish ale I have a had.

Another excellent Wee Heavy beer. I’m having a hard time deciding which I liked more. I think it goes Belhaven, Sam Adams and then Dragonmead. But it’s close.

8/11/12. GTMW. Brown pour with a small tan head. Light caramel and some toast in the aroma and flavor. For the most part, it’s really watered down, but compared to the disasters that are their other beers, it’s not horrible.

This 12 oz bottle was courtesy of Strykzone in a trade. Thanks dave. This pours a rich dark amber with a robust that left moderate lacing. Nose is rich sweet malts with a flavor hops aroma,. Medium plus in body. Flavor is rich malts. There is some bitterness in the finish. The bottom like is that is tastes very good and is a very excellent example of the style. I liked this a lot. with
