Very dark brown in color, with a vague soapy head. Aroma is grainy and contains only a hint of peat. I also detected a smell that reminded me of cellophane. Taste was spicy malt, caramel, brown sugar, and somehow, candy corn. The flavors tasted mixed-up to me and the aroma was subpar.

Sample at the brewpub. The beer pours a dark amber-brown color with a medium light beige head that evaporates steadily. Patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of peaty malt, caramel and hops. Medium body with flavors of roasted malt, dark fruit and hops. The finish is malty with notes of berries left behind. Above average overall.

Love this stuff, it embodies the best in a scotch ale. Deep rich color, raisan/plum flavor & not too boozy,.

Draft with a meal. Shiny, copper color. Light tan head. Robust peat/malt taste. Full bodied aftertaste. Nice scotch ale.

Bad Bottles? I have had three of these, and all three fit this description: light cherry pie tartness, very highly carbonated with dig dense lasting head. Very light mouthfeel, slightly bitter aftertaste. This really doesn’t taste like a scotch ale at all, closer to a flemish red, but it’s not bad! For that reason, part of my rating reflect style considerations.

Draft. Malt and peat aroma, thin head, thick and murky looking with a light brown / deep tan color. Full body. A good scotch ale.

12oz bottle from Siciliano’s Market in Grand Rapids, MI. Pours a deep ruby-brown colored body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, brown colored head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is sweeter fruits and caramel with a touch of crystal and toast. A hint of earth as well. Flavor is similar. Off berry fruit flavor up front with a sweet caramel maltiness and some crystal. Some toast in the middle with a richer toffee before some earth comes in at the end along with some roast before this finishes a bit lactic to go with the sweetness. It does dry nicely as more and more roast comes out to cut the malts with a light bitterness. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, this has some decent things going on, but the lactic berry fruit flavor is too much. It wasn’t bad, but could use some work.

Bottle in Ann Arbor. Dark red brown appearance with a light brown head. Big, rich toffee, very rich caramel malty, earthy hoppy aroma. Thick, somewhat fruity, toffee, rich caramel malty flavor.

Not a bad beer but a little light for the style, boozy with a bit of caramel. Overall not the best I’ve ever had, but I’m sure it’ll get better!!

12 oz. bottle bought in Michigan. This pours mahogany with a very small tan head that soon becomes a thin ring. A sweet rich malt nose with grain. It seems more Scotch than would be found in Scotland. That describes the flavor, too. Alcohol is noted but is not obtrusive. I taste a bit of chocolate, too. Hops emerge as it warms and they could be Cascade with citrus and a bit of bitter tartness. Earth comes later. This was a nice version of the style.

bottle... a bit of an ugly shade of brown, light watery tan had that tries to form a ring but fails... smells like an average scotch, some nice peat notes and caramel, solid... tastes way too scotchy and thin at the same time, disappointed
