3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAY 4, 2009 Caramel and sweet raisin toast aroma, a bit of alcohol smell as well. Pours a plain brown, thin wheat head. Flavor is slightly thin roast caramel and plain bread. A general sense of vague, lightly caramelized malt sugars with an average finish. A bit of alcohol taste as well.

1.8 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
Undated 12 oz bottle served in a snifter.
Pours dark but clear, with a tan head of moderate size and retention. Minimal lacing.
Aroma: more like wine vinegar than Scotch Ale.
Flavor: Some vinegar here too, about matching the dark malts. Light smoke in the finish.
O: "Unique taste" indeed. Probably not at its best, but then again the bottle was from a reliable store, and carefully cold-stored for just a few months.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tap: Trudgy, swampy brown color with a vibrant red/ruby tone throughout; creamy, beige head on top settles nicely to a chunky collar. Aroma contains a nice abundance of malt; burnt caramel, cocoa powder, & a light smokiness. Rum-raisins & plums.... The nose is sweet, but offset by a mild smoky note & some faint charred malt. Taste is big fruit up front; apples, plums, raisins, even some pear; gains some robustness from the alcohol. Light smoke, rustic caramel notes, cocoa powder, & some slightly charred woody & nutty hints. Big black currant & date-like fruit finish.
Iíve had bottles of this that were quite disappointing; quite tart mid-palate with signs of possible infection. Astringent finish, & almost cloying levels of sweetness... Seems variation of this beer can be a bitch. But when itís good... itís not bad at all.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle. Pours a dark reddish brown, with a humongous head. The head finally settles and leaves a minimal amount of head. The aroma is very heavy on fruit. There is a light nuttiness, some hints of caramel and malt. The taste follows the caramel and nuttiness. The finish is very sweet, and not quite what I'd expect from a Wee Heavy. Not too bad though

Bottle from Grand Rapids. Pours out like a cola with a bubbly brown head. Big aroma of brown sugar and roasted malt. Great malty flavor with a hint of smoke. Well made, true to style and tasty.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Appearance: Extremely dark brown. Short lived, super "fine" tan head. Minimal patchy lacing... looks pretty nice overall.
Smell: Well, well, well... malt, scotch, and dark fruits. Maybe some traces of chocolate as well. Definitely pleasing. Iíd enjoy it more if my glass didnít have a weird smell...
Taste/feel: I havenít had many, but I absolutely love scotch ales. Dark fruits are very prominent on the front, and then thereís a lot of malts, scotch, and a bit of warmth on the finish. Honestly, PERFECTLY balanced, since the beer is never too sweet or too bitter ... itís just fantastic. On top of that, the mouth feel leaves a very pleasant coating in the mouth, but itís never too thick/sticky/cloying. My guess is that this is supposed to be a sipper, but it tastes too damn good.
Under the Kilt isnít exactly cheap (I paid $3 for this bottle), but I canít say that it isnít worth that slight up-charge. A truly outstanding beer with an awesomely tasty blend of dark fruits, malts, hops, and scotch that keeps me coming for another sip. Now, one of my favorite beers.

S - Very sweet nose, burnt sugar, cane syrup and a hint of peaches.
T - Very english ESB taste. Some grape and kiwi taste. very weird and unexpected.
M - medium body and carbonation
O - Itís not a bad beer but just a bit too sweet and juicy for a scotch ale

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle poured a clear reddish brown with a lingering ring of tan foam. Aromas of carmel, toffee, dark fruit and light tobacco. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of toffee, tobacco, dark fruit and light molasses with a smooth lingering toffee finish.

2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Iím not terribly impressed by the bottled beers from this brewery. First off, their beers are expensive. Second, the quality control at this brewery is lacking. For example, sometimes their beer explodes on you upon opening, filling the glass (and covering the countertop) with foam. While I now prepare for this when opening a Dragonmead bottle, with Under the Kilt, that did not happen. Good for them! On the other hand, there was something off with this beer. Itís aroma was very faint, and while in taste it had the background of a Wee Heavy, it also had a sour kick to it, much like the sourness that is associated with Jolly Pumpkinís La Roja. I do not think this was intentional. While it didnít make the beer undrinkable, it definitely made drinking it a bit disconcerting.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark amber color, moderate head. Good aroma. Slightly smokey with a hint of peat. Creamy mouth feel, but has a bite. Over all a good ale, but not the best, Scottish ale I have a had.

Another excellent Wee Heavy beer. Iím having a hard time deciding which I liked more. I think it goes Belhaven, Sam Adams and then Dragonmead. But itís close.
