3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 joeneugs (1602) - Livermore, USA - JUN 16, 2010
Loved this porter. The pour was very dark brown with a thick tan head. The aroma was complex with chocolate, fruit, nuts and a sharp, potent roastiness that suggests a dark roast, but not overpowingly so. The flavor is the same with a terrific roasted finish. The body and carbonation were near perfect. Strong, but not abrasive. The subleties stand out nicely. Only complaint is that it tasted slightly green. Still a top notch porter.

On tap at Drake’s Barrel House pouring up deep coffee darkness with thin amber edges and light tan head that leaves behind spotty lacing. The aroma is pulsing and forcing up bold notes of burnt malts, dark roasted maltiness and dark roasted coffee. The taste is just as bold with dark roasted coffee, dark roasted malts, some burnt malts and then slippery sweet malts hidden away here and there. It ends pretty dry with lingering coffee, dark roasted malts and burnt malts. Big Robusto that I think would be a bit better with some earthiness too.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 womencantsail (3929) - Home of Rebecca Black, California, USA - MAY 9, 2011
A: The beer pours almost black in color with a finger of creamy tan head.
S: The nose is almost all roast and ash. Some notes of dark, bitter chocolate are also present, and some coffee and coffee grounds. Maybe a hint of licorice. Not terribly complex, but quite nice.
T: The flavor is fairly bitter from all of the intense roastiness. Quite a strong ash and char flavor with some dark chocolate and coffee. Somewhat astringent and slightly acidic as well.
M: Medium in body and carbonation.
O: I liked the nose on this quite a bit, but the flavor fell short and was just too heavy on the burnt flavors and bitterness.

Draft at PP Carlsbad. Dark brown, with a small dense light tan head. Dry roasted malt, small amount of chocolate and nuts, and earthy. A nice porter, but rather mundane.

On tap at the Hotel Shattuck bar. Pours dark brown with a nice tan head and a massive chocolate and treacle aroma. The flavor matches the aroma with the addition of some licorice and a long dry slightly sour finish. A unique brew.

Pours black with a nice two finger medium dark tan head that lingers. A bit thin in the mouthfeel, but otherwise solid in every way. Roasted malt and just a touch of chocolate in the nose and flavor.

Drake’s Robusto Porter @ The Hopyard. This is an excellent Cigar beer! Full of smoky notes, and a robust roastiness in this one. Pours black with tan head.
