3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
11/24/06. Poured out of 12 oz. bottle, purchased at Hollingshead Deli in Orange, CA 8/5/06. Rated blind. Pours a deep red-bronze with orange-brown glow, and fluffy beige head that lasts moderately. Lacing is decently sticky and tightly-woven, fairly uniform. Muted caramel nose with earthy, dirty-hop and sourdough-wheat bread crust bitterness, subtle dried fruit and a slight leathery twang. Soft carbonation with a fluffy airiness lifting a medium-full body to medium-light in effect. Slightly papery with a fuzzy, itching bitterness and a dry, deeply toasty (bordering roasted), scratchy finish. Maybe a bit past its prime. The flavor has worn fairly thin, and I wonder if there were ever much depth or elegance to the malt extraction in the first place. Seems almost like a mediocre hoppy barley wine that has faded. Some alcohol comes through the dirty bitterness, and a sticky, resinous film is left on the tongue and lips. Surprised to find that itís actually an amber ale-- quite a hoppy and toasty one, at that. And considering the gravity of this and the fairly light alcohol, thereís actually quite a lot of flavor, but I think my bottle is a bit too old. Might want to re-rate for a little more perspective.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a deep deep ruby red with a small white head and good lacing.
Smells heavily of toffee/caramel. Very sweet on the nose. A little bit of an earthy smell as well. Maybe a little pine. Allergies are acting up a bit today so my nose feels a bit off.
Sweet caramel malts smack the palate at first, but it rounds into a good piney bitterness that lingers on the tongue. I thought from the smell this may be too sweet, but even though the caramel is strong the hops do a good job balancing to prevent it from becoming cloying.
Medium-high mouthfeel. A bit sticky but the finish is still somewhat dry though with medium carbonation level.
Picked this one up on a whim while in SD and had never heard of Drakeís before but love reds. Not the very best Iíve had, but a solid example of the style.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Huge beige head lasts forever, blocking access to the actual
beer. Clear brown body with carbonation. Roasty dusty lacquer
aroma with spicy caramel notes. Dry, and faintly sweet, wooden
lacquer taste with spicy earthy resiny notes. Mid-to-light body.
Mildish, kind of flat mouthfeel. Dry earthy resiny spicy
aftertaste with lacquer and pine needle notes. Nice,
interesting, full of character. (0.65l bottle, from Kihoskh,
Copenhagen. Label said 7.0%.)

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Mane Liquor. Ruby red pour with a solid, firm two finger beige head. Nose shows lots of hop resin, some tropical hoppage and heavy toffee malts. Stewed fruits and caramel front up in the taste with reoccurring tropical hops and resin towards the back end. Nice. Slightly sweet with some lingering bitterness. Flows well with the soft carbonation. Nice stuff

bomber into a tulip
Mahogany brown color. Big, three finger head, settled to a solid half finger of light brown head. Half a glass of streaked lacing.
Nose is of malt and dark fruits. Slight undertone of citrus. Hops have faded pretty much but a good malty nose.
Taste is very similar. Lots of stewed dark fruits, good, sweet caramel backbone and just a slight dash of citrus and pine that builds as the beer opens up.
Highly carbonated. Very perky carbonation and lighter bodied considering the malt profile. More hop profile in the mid and back. Touches of menthol in the back along with pine. Sweet, dry and bitter finish. Held up pretty nicely.

This is a dark and roasty IPA. Clear brown with small head and moderate lacing. Very malty aroma with hints of dark fruit. The taste is heavy with malt and raisins/plums. It is crisp on the finish with a nice hop bitterness.

Bottled. Pours clear and deep brown with an average off-white head with fair lacing. Nose of citrus fruits, nuts and caramel. Sweet flavor wiyh a solid bitter finish. The body is full, oily texture and soft CO2. Quite nice indeed.
