4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: FEB 27, 2014 I previously reviewed this based on a draft pour at the 2013 release. It was not particularly good and i gave it a too-generous 3.7. Now i have a bottle from the 2014 release. Much much better. Appearance is very similar. Aroma is improved, a little tropical and dank in equal measure, with some pine, alcohol, and malty notes also in the mix. Whereas last years batch had an off-flavor that really killed it, this years is purely bitter hops, guava, with a resinous finish. And alcohol, naturally, but not as high as i expect from the high ABV.

10oz draft at Lake Tahoe. Pours an amber reddish color, with a white foam that sticks on the glass. Super sweet beer from the high abv. Aromas of pine, toffee, sweet onion. Flavors of sweet caramel, bitter hops, biscuit malts. Pretty similar to Founders Devil Dancer.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle thanks to Bill. Pours a cloudy orange copper with medium off white head that lasts. The aroma is strong floral hop and pine. Nice hop bite, thick mouth, strong pine, grapefruit, resin, and lingering bitterness. Really enjoyed this one.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: FEB 10, 2015 "What a treat! The 12.5% gave me puse, but only briefly. They did SO well on this beer. I like most all of their hoppy offerings, and they have 3 different IIPA’s that stand out from the crowd, including the "regular" Hopocalypse, at a mere 9.5%. This thing is a whole nother beast. Definitely sweeter and thicker, but not maltier per se...still keeps it’s wonderfull resiny aroma and taste. Actually pine resin would seem to be the key ingredient :) It’s the smoothness and utter drinkability of this beer that blows my mind, though. The bitterness is there, but only sneaks up on you at the end (or after), and the sweetness is intense without any cloying. AWESOME brew."

4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Hopocalypse Black Label
APPEARANCE: Poured a dark over ripe nectarine color, subtle but bright light honey colored variations throughout. Big fluffy loosely bubbled 2 finger head that dissipated slowly leaving a nice spotted lacing on the glass. Really enjoy the color of this beer!
AROMA: Smells like I'm cutting fresh fruit for a tropical salad. Mango, papaya and pineapple. Lemon zest and a nice malty sweetness. Very I pressed with the nose on this considering it's a more then a few months old. Juicy and wet aroma not much of a hop present. Possibly slight pine resin but that also could because I know what drinking and what I should be looking for.
TASTE: Wow! This tastes amazing. Like a party in my mouth and tropical fruit was invited. So much mango, nectarine candied pineapple but not overwhelming at all. Nice squeeze of fresh lemon comes in and I'm actually picking up some nice muted hops that work really well. I am getting some honey sweet malty goodness coming through I'm assuming more now then would be if fresh. Slight bitterness on the end that really pulls the flavor profile together.
MOUTHFEEL: Medium plus body and a lazy low carbonation that just kinda pops and tingles slightly. Light oil slickness with a great bitter warm finish from the high ABV.
OVERALL: I was very impressed with this triple for such a high ABV it was very drinkable for me. I enjoyed every last drop! Would love to have had this fresh to compare. It did drink a bit more like a barley wine almost like an aged hopslam. I would for sure search this out either fresh or with age on it any day!
RATING: 4.8/5 Zombie Heads!

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
My perusal of previous ratings revealed that this beer is polarizing. I loved it. Pours perfect clear pear with mid-sized white head. Super piney scent. Flavor takes a massive bitter hop bite up front and follows with a candy sweet finish. Live mouthfeel. More please. Bottle - Received in Trade

22oz bomber. Thank you Bytemesis for picking up for me. Served cold and left cone to room temp. A big, bold IIIPA. Honey drizzled orange citrus aromas and flavors. Big, rich, and full-bodied. Huge malt backbone. Nothing subtle about this beer.
