Commercial Description:
Russian Imperial Stouts were originally brewed in the early 20th century in England for export to the Imperial Court of Russia. These beers were made with a higher starting gravity and higher hopping rates to make the voyage by sea. Drake’s Imperial Stout is brewed to an original gravity of 21.5°P. by a mall bill of 91% Malted Barley, 4% Crystal Malt, 3% Roasted Barley and 2% Chocolate Malt. Chinook hops were added to balance the beer. A hearty yeast strain was used to create a beer that weighs in at a robust 8.75% Alc. by Vol. A Pint a Day Keeps Scurvy Away!

Pitch black with no head, still in the glass. Deep rich scent of coffee, prunes and shoyu. Sweet fruit, plums, dark chocolate, traces of coffee and alcohol. Sticky feel, flat. A bit too sweet for me to really love.

Received this as an extra in a trade and it leaked it a little through the flip top so I had to drink it immediately, which isn’t too bad of a problem to have. Pours a dark brown and surprisingly it still has a nice mocha brown head that lasts for quite a while and leaves some nice lacing. Smells mostly roasty, with some coffee and cocoa going on as well. Not a very complex nose. Taste is a nice heavy roast with a coffee/cocoa backing and a sharp hop/roast bitterness in the after taste. The alcohol is pretty present in the flavor and detracts a bit from an other wise nice imperial stout. Not the best in the world but I wouldn’t turn it down if offered to me again.

Thanks to Josh & Jon for these! Viscous black pour khaki head and some spotty lace. Roast, and coffee on the nose. Velvety mouth-feel and very rich.. Bittersweet chocolate, coffee, sweet malts and hops. Dry roasty finish

Opaque brown-black with a fine, medium-thin, quickly-dissapating head that almost needs coaxing out of the beer. Dark, thick, bittersweet chocolate and coffee up front in the nose along with dark fruit (black cherries) and alcohol syrup--which when combined with the spicy hops characteristics almost resembles cough syrup (though not negatively so, thankfully). Some malt and alcohol sweetness with lots of chocolate flavors and bitterness from both the roasted grain and hops. Big, rich, thick, full, body with strong, palate-saturating flavors that stick around through a long finish. The alcohol is a significant flavor component though not overdone and virtually no warmth in the finish. Good balance with lots of strength, complexity, and intensity.

Delicious, dark, thick imperial. The mouth feel is luscious and the flavors are decadent. It has no head, which one of my only complaints. Otherwise its one of my favorite stouts. And certainly the best I’ve had on the west coast.

Solid black color with little to no head. Roasted coffee and malt aroma. Nice roasted caramel malit at the end. A bit too flat, maybe just got a bad bottle.
