tiggmtl (4178), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Mar 26, 2008 Strong, sweet chocolate aroma with sweet marzipan and alcohol is simple and to the point. Opaque brown body is topped by a shy, off white, mostly diminishing head. Vanilla, chocolate , dark malts are apparent in the sweet flavour. Some alcohol warming. Medium-full body with rather low carbonation. Bottle sampled at Oakes’ Xmas tasting 2007.
PJClarke (50), London, Surrey, England Nov 30, 2008 Great looking beer. Fluffy, steady, aerated head of beige atop a dark brown/black body. Dark metallic malts with chocolate hit. Outrageous dark chocolate flavours in the mouth. Hops appear if only briefly filling the mouth with an airy bitterness. Quite boozy which gives you brandy-like glow of heat. Hints of brown spirits along with something peaty. The alcohol content is apparent in feeling but not flavour which i find to be a problem with many imperial stouts. Foamy but smooth in the mouth. A little harsh in the aftertaste but very pleasant. Snojerk321 (1120), San Diego, California, USA Nov 19, 2008 Bottle from BevMo Mission Valley. Pours ink black with a small chocolate head. Aromas of dark roasted malt with, coffee, chocolate, toffee and booze. Flavor was roasted coffee and smooth, creamy chocolate. Finish was smooth and a little boozy. 0o9i (272), Reno, Nevada, USA Nov 1, 2008 Grolsch bottle. Body is pitch black, topped with an initially large head that thins down, becomes creamy, and never leaves despite coating the glass with creamy brown foam. I smell some musk, molasses, a ridiculous amount of roasted malt, some pine, some booze, maybe a touch of chocolate. Mouth is medium-full with light, kind of creamy, kind of coarse carbonation. Flavor is a touch of chocolate, molasses, very bitter with lots of roasted malts and some hidden-but-present hops in the pine//grapefruit rind flavors. A touch of booze, warming. Long, bitter, roasted chocolate aftertaste with a hint of pine. A bit more than a stout in terms of body and strength of flavor, but not really what I hope for from an IStout. Lacks complexity, body, alcohol is too dominant for the so-so flavor it provides. danielcurtis81 (260), San Diego, California, USA Oct 26, 2008 Getting Notebook Online. Bottle. Pours a rich black. Roasted malt nose. Roasted malt flavor with some chocolate and smoke notes. A hopy bitter finish. Pretty good IS! ross (1582), charlotte, North Carolina, USA Oct 25, 2008 Bottle. About a year of age on this one, perhaps a little bit less. Pops open with literally no noise, thus I figured my bottle was flat. Pours with no head on it. On the contrary - Sean had one at the same time and his had a head on it. Odd. I figured this to be a drain pour because it looked still. Smell was very fruity, some alcohol, coffee, huge amounts of chocolate and roasted malt, and some nutty smell as well. Taste is smooth and lightly carbonated, very light really. Doesnt a tad too thin at times, but it works. Taste is very close to everything picked up in the smell except for the lack of alcohol. Thank god there isnt much alcohol in the taste on this one, I think that is what makes it so easy to drink. Overall a good beer. Not the best stout ever, but its certainly drinkable, and comes in a cool little bottle.
