3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tap @ Pizza Port Strong Ale fest 2009. I think it was the 2008 on tap thought there was no vintage stated. Pours a very dark reddish brown with a fluffy beige head, nice lacing. Nose held some smoke, tons of toffee and molasses, some hops. Flavor was sweet with syrupy caramel, toffee with some hop bitterness on the finish.

Ok, first off, who spells Rodger with a ’d’? I’m glad Drake’s changed this one (did they?). Oh well, I’ll ignore that for now. This was a good scotch ale, maybe got a bad break that I had AleSmith Wee Heavy right after it. Dark reddish brown with a beige head. Very malty with molasses, some smoke, and chocolate. Smooth palate. Enjoyable - had it on tap at City Beer Store, where I was promised Struise Black Albert but had to settle for this. Not a bad consolation prize.

EJ Phair broke out the fancy glassware for this one..? Strong malt, fine bitterness that blends well with the over all taste. Also, it comes together really well and there is the sense that this one could have gotten out of control very easily. Good lacing, color, a really great appearance. I don’t know the story behind the Drakes right now, but things are changing over there, but hopefully the beers will keep tasting like this.

On tap at Toronado. The d is dropped in honor of Rodger’s departure. This is a nice version of the Jolly Ro(d)ger series. It’s dark brown and pours with a decent tan head and a smoky aroma. There is a little malt sweetness which is trumped by some fairly intense hopping, leaving a pleasant bitterness on the palate.

Tap at the Toronado. The body was deep brown chestnut with a khaki colored head. The aroma was malty caramel with some apples and grapefruit. The taste was grapefruit with some milk chocolate. There were also some almonds. Nice.

Draft at Toronado. Light brownish grey color. Lots of hops in the aroma, mostly the earthy type. Flavor is the same, quite bitter, and some dark malt as well. Kind of like a stronger version of a black IPA. Interesting, but not all that impressive.

Draft. Note name change to Roger now that Rodger has left. Ruby-bronze beer with a big light tan head. Summer/grapefruit aroma. Rich malt flavor with lots of clean summer fruit/grapefruit. Medium-plus bodied. Nice bitterness. Rich caramel malt lingers with summer fruit and grapefruit. Very nice. Very drinkable. Slightly darker malts in background.
