COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
after years of scallywagging about and dallying with any style that caught its fancy, good ole JR is returning to it’s original form, an American Barleywine. Originally crafted as a holiday brew that Drake’s brewers could get behind, Jolly had all the warming powers of malt and alcohol, minus the strange holiday beer ubiquitousness of overpowering pie spices, and finished with the open handed smack of bold Northwest American hops. The 2012 Jolly Rodger is full-bodied with rich caramel malt undertones and mild biscuit malt character. Sufficient additions of West Coast hops balance the malt with pine needle aromatics and satisfying bitterness.

655 ml. bottle sampled @ Pure Apricot Tasting. Thanks! Hope that this is the version that I had, I remember someone reading the label & saying distinctly that this was a Barley Wine. GUSHER! Darker amber brown, little head. Sweet herbal, candy, caramel nose. Taste is bitter herbal, sweetish malt, candy, caramel, brown sugar, biscuit, herbal hop finish,… Med. thicker malty body. Nice but nothing stellar.

Bottle from Burg Bieren, large sample, served in a tulip glass. Clear amber color, short frothy head. Aroma of biscuit, cookie, whole grain cookie, some grapefruit, pine, slight milk chocolate and mocha, hint of toffee. Bit sweet in taste from whole grain coffee cookie, bit bitter as well. Nice combination of biscuity and grainy malts and grapefruit and piney hops. Soft carbonation, medium bodied. Nice american strong ale / barley wine.

Bomber bought @ bierkompass.de. Pours clear deep amber with a rather big frothy goldenish offwhite head that leaves some thick lacing on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet and slightly malty with heavy caramel, resinous wood, toffee, alcohol, grapefruit rinds, sweet dark bread, pine needles and orange zest. Taste is sweet, bitter, malty and earthy with heavy caramel, toffee, resinous wood, grapefruit rinds, moist tobacco, pine needles, alcohol, minerals and orange zest. Mouthfeel is round, sticky, viscous and medium to full bodied. Finish is slightly sweet, bitter and earthy with caramel, toffee, resinous wood, alcohol, grapefruit rinds, pine needles and orange zest. Exactly what I expected it to and hoped it to be: A caramel and resin punch in the face!
