COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
after years of scallywagging about and dallying with any style that caught its fancy, good ole JR is returning to it’s original form, an American Barleywine. Originally crafted as a holiday brew that Drake’s brewers could get behind, Jolly had all the warming powers of malt and alcohol, minus the strange holiday beer ubiquitousness of overpowering pie spices, and finished with the open handed smack of bold Northwest American hops. The 2012 Jolly Rodger is full-bodied with rich caramel malt undertones and mild biscuit malt character. Sufficient additions of West Coast hops balance the malt with pine needle aromatics and satisfying bitterness.

Orange pour with a white head. The aroma has some toffee and pine notes. The flavor is a mix of pine and orange from the hops as well as some caramel and toffee that help keep the bitterness down. I also get a bit of alcohol. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Thanks Chris and Meredith! Bottle. The aroma escapes the instant I break the cap’s seal -- rich with warming sugar and a sense of home. It carries almost 2 feet from the goblet! The beer is deep brown, like stained oak furniture. The head is firm and stoic. The beer drinks with an amazing balance, rich with baked brown sugar and warming ethanol, laced with some pine and citric acidity. Remarkably easy to drink for its depth and strength. Amazing stuff. 11/23/13. 22oz bottle. Amber brown pour with a nice khaki tan head that sticks. Malty aroma, some distinct fruitiness, dark fruits, brown sugar, burnt toffee and caramel. Nice flavor, mellow, good bitterness balances with dark sugars and fruits, toffee, and biscuity malt. Tasty.

Pours dark red with white head. Aroma is caramel, strawberries, raspberries, fruity, wood, sweet and aromatic hops. Flavour is medium to heavy bitter, fruity, wood, caramel and sweet. Full, thick and medium carbonated. Normally I love bitter but maybe they went a bit over the top with the hops for this one. I’m not sure it should be this bitter. Nonetheless, excellent brew.

Medium beige head. Clear deep dark red body. Fruity resiny raisiny aroma with strawy chocolatey notes. Dry-sweet strawy roasty fruity taste with resiny raisiny notes. Mid-to-full body. Sharpish mouthfeel. Dryish resiny strawy marzipan aftertaste with raisiny toffee and spice notes. Lovely! Highly drinkable, gorgeous malt character, well balanced hop spiciness. A very good beer. (0.65l bottle, from Kihoskh, Copenhagen.)
