after years of scallywagging about and dallying with any style that caught its fancy, good ole JR is returning to itís original form, an American Barleywine. Originally crafted as a holiday brew that Drakeís brewers could get behind, Jolly had all the warming powers of malt and alcohol, minus the strange holiday beer ubiquitousness of overpowering pie spices, and finished with the open handed smack of bold Northwest American hops. The 2012 Jolly Rodger is full-bodied with rich caramel malt undertones and mild biscuit malt character. Sufficient additions of West Coast hops balance the malt with pine needle aromatics and satisfying bitterness.

11/23/13. 22oz bottle. Amber brown pour with a nice khaki tan head that sticks. Malty aroma, some distinct fruitiness, dark fruits, brown sugar, burnt toffee and caramel. Nice flavor, mellow, good bitterness balances with dark sugars and fruits, toffee, and biscuity malt. Tasty.

Pours dark red with white head. Aroma is caramel, strawberries, raspberries, fruity, wood, sweet and aromatic hops. Flavour is medium to heavy bitter, fruity, wood, caramel and sweet. Full, thick and medium carbonated. Normally I love bitter but maybe they went a bit over the top with the hops for this one. Iím not sure it should be this bitter. Nonetheless, excellent brew.

Medium beige head. Clear deep dark red body. Fruity resiny raisiny aroma with strawy chocolatey notes. Dry-sweet strawy roasty fruity taste with resiny raisiny notes. Mid-to-full body. Sharpish mouthfeel. Dryish resiny strawy marzipan aftertaste with raisiny toffee and spice notes. Lovely! Highly drinkable, gorgeous malt character, well balanced hop spiciness. A very good beer. Almost clear deep amber beer. Good pale cream coloured head. Smooth palate, slightly soft and semi dry. Creamy malt, sweet and with a toffee streak. Slight salty streak with bitterish peel hops. Little spice. Finishes semi dry. Bitter linger. Hangs together well.

looks beautiful, amber with nice head. Aroma is resiny hoppy, malty, caramel. Taste is similar, nice balance, typical US barleywine with big hop profile and bitterness yet very well balance by a complex and smooth malt profile. Not alcohol noticable, - very underrated imo.

Bottle:   Reddish amber, thick and hazy, large frothy tannish head, nice lacing.   Faint citrus and bready aroma, light caramel and toffee, with minor candied pith and peel.   Smooth on the tongue, malty, hops arenít big but feel green in their bitterness, with soft caramel and toffee background.   Could stand to be a touch sweeter.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Decent balance on the finish, just wished it were a bit sweeter.   A little English at times, at others American.   Middle of the road, but solid and clean.

75 cl bottle @ RIP camp, bottled 26.11.2012
Aroma is sweet with caramel, resiny malt and some berry tones. Flavour is heavy and fruity with malt, caramel, some resiny notes and some vanilla. Also some woody tones. Too sweet, but then again what else can an American BW be?

Once again the D and G were on top of each other and I never understood

Pours clear orange color with a small head. Aroma of resinous hops, grass, caramel malts, toffee notes, wet cardboard and apricot. Flavor of resin, caramel malts, some citric fruits and goose berries. Bitter fruity palate with a bit too strong malty and resinous finish. Not bad though.
