COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
after years of scallywagging about and dallying with any style that caught its fancy, good ole JR is returning to itís original form, an American Barleywine. Originally crafted as a holiday brew that Drakeís brewers could get behind, Jolly had all the warming powers of malt and alcohol, minus the strange holiday beer ubiquitousness of overpowering pie spices, and finished with the open handed smack of bold Northwest American hops. The 2012 Jolly Rodger is full-bodied with rich caramel malt undertones and mild biscuit malt character. Sufficient additions of West Coast hops balance the malt with pine needle aromatics and satisfying bitterness.

Bottle. Cloudy burnt orange pour with an off white head. Enticing caramel malt aromas. Shit, this barley wine has potential, but itís tough to get pass the dominating grapefruit and grassy hop bitterness. Undercurrents of tasty caramel malts and muted orange liquor. Good mouthfeel and body.

Pours a red amber color with thick off white head. Malt, caramel and pine aromas. Malt, caramel, hops and pine taste with a slightly bitter caramel finish. Spectacular is the word that comes to mind.

65cl, Vintage 2012, new American brew, from De Hopduvel Gent, complex brew, malty/sweet and slightly bitter/fruity, not too heavy, balanced, hazy, good head, good Winter brew, yet expensive!

22oz bottle, shared by DanielCoor. Mostly clear reddish amber color. Good thin khaki head. Solid lace. Bigger body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. Kind of creamy. Nice spicy hop profile. Some chocolate. Light dark fruit. More sweet taste, though not cloying at all. Light bitter. Nice spicy hop, kind of earthy. Great stuff.

On draught at Drakes. Dark red-brown with a good bubbly head. Nice crystal malt aroma, and flavour. Pretty good, though a little 2D. Smooth and hides the alcohol reasonably well.

Drakeís Jolly Rodger 2012 1/5/13 notes: Bottle, $6.99. American Barley Wine, and shows its tried and true colors well. Toasty, piney aroma, robust and with hints of black cherry. Flavor is simultaneous wallops of bready, kilned malts and floral, piney, resiny hops. Could detect a fairly classic CCC possibly Simcoe hop blend, nothing nouveau here and thatís fun. Great beer.

Sampled at the Alaskan Barleywine Festival. I always look forward to trying a new Drakes beer. Grainy, hoppy, malty, warming, citrus, slight astringency. A tasty brew.

Bomber. Caramel, grapefruit and pine. A bit resiny. Lingering bitterness with a light alcohol burn.

Bomber poured a clear reddish amber with a lasting amber head. Aromas of floral notes, carmel, grapefruit, pine, tangerine, peach and light melon. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, peach, earthiness, pine and grapefruit with a smooth lingering earthy finish.
