COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
after years of scallywagging about and dallying with any style that caught its fancy, good ole JR is returning to it’s original form, an American Barleywine. Originally crafted as a holiday brew that Drake’s brewers could get behind, Jolly had all the warming powers of malt and alcohol, minus the strange holiday beer ubiquitousness of overpowering pie spices, and finished with the open handed smack of bold Northwest American hops. The 2012 Jolly Rodger is full-bodied with rich caramel malt undertones and mild biscuit malt character. Sufficient additions of West Coast hops balance the malt with pine needle aromatics and satisfying bitterness.

Appearance: Dark amber with 2 finger thick ivory head. Aroma: Christmas cake, raisin, prune, vinous, slight chocolate note, hint of cherry, vanilla, grapefruit and pine. Taste: Low sweetness and sourness, medium/high bitterness which is fairly harsh. The flavours are an amalgamation of cherry, vinous notes and grapefruit like bitterness. Palate: Thick texture and mouthfeel with a medium body, and low carbonation. Lingering astringent bitter finish. Comments: Quite harsh bitterness akin to an IPA but still very enjoyable and refreshing.

Bottle shared by deyholla, thanks Derek!! Pours a pretty dark amber with foamy white head and laces well. Nose is boozer honey: rich but balanced. Taste is tasty combo of booze burn, bitter to cut and sweet honey to balance. Very good example of a barley wine.

Bottle thanks to a trade! Pours a clear amber orange with a grayish light brown head that dissipates to the edges slowly. Aroma has a combination of pine and sweet grains with a bit of underlying resin. Flavor starts with sweet grains but finish is strong pine with a bit of grass and a resin kick.
