COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
after years of scallywagging about and dallying with any style that caught its fancy, good ole JR is returning to it’s original form, an American Barleywine. Originally crafted as a holiday brew that Drake’s brewers could get behind, Jolly had all the warming powers of malt and alcohol, minus the strange holiday beer ubiquitousness of overpowering pie spices, and finished with the open handed smack of bold Northwest American hops. The 2012 Jolly Rodger is full-bodied with rich caramel malt undertones and mild biscuit malt character. Sufficient additions of West Coast hops balance the malt with pine needle aromatics and satisfying bitterness.

bomber from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours dark ruddy copper with a creamy off-white head that tried to lace. Aroma of darker bread with a hint of treacle. Med body. Flavor isn’t sticky sweet, but it’s dark brown sugar, a little heat, and some damn strong hop. This doesn’t finish like a relaxing sipper. This ale is strongly bitter - yet allows the odd sweet note (treacle for one) to pop out once in awhile. Good stuff.

Hazy amber/copper pour with a small off-white head. Sweet caramel and brown sugar nose, some toffee, and plenty of fruit and citrus. Grapefruit, orange, and piney hops. Slight perfume, too. Nice balance of sweetness, alcohol, and bitterness. Pine, grapefruit peel, and heavy floral qualities. Sweet caramel and toffee maltiness, some peach, and brown sugar.

Bomber poured a clear reddish amber with a lasting amber head. Aromas of floral notes, carmel, grapefruit, pine, tangerine, peach and light melon. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, peach, earthiness, pine and grapefruit with a smooth lingering earthy finish.

Nice dark caramel colored pour, small off white head. Sweet malts combine with some spicy hops notes. Quite a hoppy barleywine.

Bottle. Pours with a lightly haze bronze-amber hued body with a lasting medium sized off-white head. Aromas are of crystal malt, brown sugar, sawdust, sandalwood, pine, citrus, raisins, dried currants and resin. Flavors are bitter, tar, caramel, green hops, raw, bitter, grassy, toasted, medium esters, strawberry. Almost tannic in the bitterness. Dry finish. I guess my preferences are out of line with the crystal content and hops in most west coast barley wines today. Quite full carbonation (higher 2.6s if I had to guess), dry finish, full bodied and warming.

Medium, cream-coloured head over finely carbonated brownish orange beer. Sharpish initial nose of alcohol and ink. Some hints at seewater/food (sepia?). Then more classical sweet-nutty, caramel induced aromas. Even a bit cheesy. Bitter, going over in roasted-sweet, caramelly and even syrupy notes. The hop is present, but cannot control the ubiquitous caramel. There is some balance, but me seems there’s not much going on for a big barley wine. Aftertaste shows some spiciness, and again a hint at cheese. Very slick, onctuous but not really overfully bodied as some - there’s restraint here, which is a good thing. Yeah, it’s worthwile, but it won’t drive me wild.

Sample at a weekly bottle sharing event at Red House BBQ in Tehachapi, CA on 02/02/2013. Pours a dark ruby-amber color with a medium thick and foamy beige head that dissipates steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of toasted malt, caramel and hops. Medium to full body with flavors of caramel malt, herbal hops and fruit. The finish is malty with a short grassy hops aftertaste. Above average overall.

Bottle @ "Press Deans button tasting". Clear dark amber to reddish color, small beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, nicely hoppy and a bit sweet. Taste malts, hops, lightly alcohol, some sweetness. Really nice, love this one. Full body, long lingering bitter alcoholic finish, medium body. Very nice!

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein rötlichoranges Bier mit geringer Schaumkrone. Geruch sehr süß malzig, Karamell, holzig, alkoholisch. Geschmack angenehm malzig fruchtig, wärmend, Karamell, alkoholisch.
