COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
While Jolly Rodger’s been around a long time, it’s also new pretty much every year. It originated as an English-style barleywine, then was later a brown ale, an Imperial Red, and last year made it (almost) full-circle as an American Barleywine. Many years (and many people with some form of the name "Roger") later, we’re going real dark with what will be an 11.5% Imperial American Black Ale (slash Black IPA slash Cascadian Dark Ale).

Also of note, even a pirate’s bound to make a friend or two in 23 years, so this year, Jolly Rodger will be accompanied by some one-off partners J. Rodgerator Doppelbock and Abominably Jolly Imperial White IPA.

22 oz. bottle from notes. Pours dark brown to black in color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malts, some chocolate, grapefruit citrus, resiny hops, a splash of coffee with a hint of caramel, citrus peel, the abv remains well hidden, but warms quite a bit.

very good black ipa...equal parts dark roast and hoppy goodness...and aggressive on both fronts. smooth yet big, and easy drinking for a strong beer.

Dark mahogany pour with hints of ebony and a light latte crown. Grapefruit pith, orange peel, and lemon zest accompanied by roasted grains, caramel, and a hint of coffee. Invisible alcohol...dangerous, in fact. Pretty damn good.

Bottle (thanks Chris!!). Overall, I call this a subtly hopped, wickedly frothy, flavorful porter. It has perfect visuals, clearly thick and full-bodied. It has a tangy hop araom, but that flavor aspect is well blended into what seems a rich, chocolatey, almost sweet dark ale. Wonderful. (#5446, 2/26/2014)

Bottle. Brown pour with a kaki head. Caramel malts, and mild chocolate notes. Might be aged a bit as most of the hop presence had dissipated. Good body and mouthfeel.

Bottle. Pours with a black hued body with a large and retentive brown head that leaves great lace. Aromas are of alcohol, boozy sweetness, tamarind, candied citrus, dank hops and tangerines. Flavors are of tropical fruit, mango, slightly NZ hop like, tangerines and some alcohol. Ethanol or yeast based strawberry ester/notes. Sweetness seems alcohol derived and not from any sort of dextrinous malt. Low bitterness but quite hoppy. Better than expected from the aroma. Warming, low bodied, medium carbonation. Wish it was half the alcohol, but tasty none the less.

Appearance: Pours black with a thin cap of froth.

Aroma: Big bright citrus/grapefruit burst. Grape/dark fruit tobacco, black licorice.

Taste: Grapefruit like hops. Starts out fruity. Mild dark chocolate with a beautiful melange of bitter, resinous and citrusy hops. Surprisingly not so bitter in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Smooth , full bodied. Average carbonation.

Overall: A very enjoyable big black ale. The level and complexity of the hops made this beer. While it didn’t seem like an 11.5% beer, it hit me like one, so be careful.
