4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 Cooperii (61) - California, USA - DEC 4, 20122012 Bottle poured a deep amber with slightly off white head with fair lacing. Aromas are hoppy with a malty undertones subtle fruityness. Flavors are of bitter hops, grapefruit and rye with mild malty body followed by subtle notes of tropical fruit. The Finish; quite hoppy for a barleywine, big bright citrus flavors up front tapering to malts and light fruity undertones with a lingering dry bitterness.

Very nice hop forward barleywine with a nice sweet malt profile. The hops are slightly grassy and resinous, while the malt shows flavors of candied orange and slight dark fruit. Overall pretty good.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 lobotomizdgoat (18) - California, USA - FEB 10, 2013
This tasted like more of an American Barley Wine than a Scotch Ale to me. That said, it great as the former and decent as the latter. Malt character was thick but not pronounced, hops took over quickly with notes of citrus and wood.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 DedicatedToFun (653) - Alabama, USA - DEC 12, 2012

Great winter beer. Smells awesome, lot of herbs. Pouts black with brown head. Smooth taste, a little bit of a hoppy aftertaste. Had on tap.

Tried at toncatcher’s T3 tasting. I’ve been very eager to try this for some time. Very mellow and sweet. Excellent. Very easy to drink.

T3 from AlohaC. I liked this one a lot. Medium brown in the glass, with an off-white head to ring and lace. Warm and brown sugar nose. Sweet and boozy. Smoooooooth in the mouth. Really, 20 year old bottle? Oldest for me by far.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 StefanSD (1793) - Lakeside, California, USA - APR 5, 2009
UPDATED: APR 8, 2009 12 oz bottle courtesy of alohac. Pours a light brown color with no real head to speak of. The aroma was dark and musty with peat, oak and some walnut. The flavor was that of a slightly oxidized barleywine. Finishes long and dry. The palate was slightly thin. Overall: Somebody said that this was a 20 year old bottle. if so, this has mellowed out real good for a 20 year old bottle. Thanks christian.

12oz, thanks Christian, this is the very first bottling of jolly rodger and the bottle came from AlohaC via owner/headbrewer of drakes. Thanks for another tick from a very good friend but also a cool dude on Ratebeer. Pours brown with some bubles. Nose is sweet and boozy. Taste is sweet and became a really nice barleywine, at least 20 years out.

Tried this on tap at The Red in Santa Cruz, CA. Black pour with small tan head. Aroma of molasses really hits you, then the flavor goes to some caramel and coffee. Good stuff, very drinkable.
