4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 CaptainCougar (6835) - Columbia, USA - MAR 1, 2004
Barrel #1, gold wax: Pours a very dark, nearly opaque robust dark brown with a thin covering of a light tan head. Aroma is intensly complex resonating with caramel, oak, brown sugar, soy sauce, oak and a hint of sour cherries. Body starts brown sugary sweet with some dark fruit flavor and some mild tartness. A little thin at first, but gets fuller as it warms. Exhibits great balance throughout. Finishes soft, rich and warming. Seems to be more of an old ale than an imperial stout, but a wonderful brew either way. Thanks to Flipbrewer for this one!

Bottle: The aroma is moderately roasty with chocolate and strong alcohol and port notes. It pours a dark brown with faint orange hilights around the outer edges of the glass and a small beige head. The flavor has lots of sour cherry and vinous notes with a touch of chocolate and faint roastiness.

Bottle. 2002. Big thanks to aspidites for providing a beer I never thought I’d get to try!
Pours brown with a light tan head. Very busy aroma. Somewhat sour with port and tobacco notes. Oxidized but nice none-the-less.
Sour and somewhat acidic with cherry, port and brandy notes. VERY nice!
4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 GG (1980) - NorCal, California, USA - FEB 26, 2007
NorCal tasting Feb 07 - Gold wax bottle. This was just insanely tasty. Nose was a little soy (in a good way), chocolate, dark fruits, vanilla and lightly acidic. Appearance was dark brown in color with a light tan colored head. Mouthfeel was slick, oily and smooth. Flavors were acidic, sour, alcohol, chocolate, sweet malts and some nice port qualities. Just an outstanding beer. Too bad they are nearly impossible to find.

Valley Brew tasting Feb 2007 - Aroma and flavor are roasty dark malts with strong alcohol. The port barrel leaves it’s mark in the form of red wine, leather and oak. All this is followed by a dark chocolate covered cherry or prune. Very tasty and I’ll take port over bourbon anyday.
