Dawn must have some sort of secret connection on the West Coast to keep bringing back such an amazing selection. This one was the last I tried and almost as excellent as everything else over the course of the night. I think if I were to have this standalone it might get a bump from a fresh palate. As it is I am glad to have tried such a solid beer. I can’t imagine how strong this one is on tap.
Aroma / Appearance - The caramel body wasn’t very carbonated but made up for it with an assertive hops presence. The resin was like a spring pine forest after a late season snowstorm. Maple syrup only added to the experience making me look forward to all the festivals coming in the next two months.
Flavor / Palate - The mouthfeel was a little too thick and syrupy. Once past that however the resin start was complimented by the caramel transition and finish. The dry aftertaste leaves a mark on the throat even after a glass of water. I’m surprised this is 10.4% because it was very easy to drink even after 20+ other samples.
hopdog (4346), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 18, 2008 On tap at the Freakin Frog - they freaked me out when I ordered this and they said I kicked the tap and they ’might’ not have another keg. Poured a deeper amberish color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of tropical fruits, pine, citrus, skunky weed, and caramel. Tastes of tropical fruits, ’husky’, caramel, citrus, and caramel, and pine. Alcohol content well hidden. egajdzis (2864), Terrapin, Pennsylvania, USA May 25, 2008 [Draft @ Freakin Frog] Poured a deep amber color with a small, off white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of pine, caramel malts, citrus, resin, and light alcohol. Taste of sticky pine, resiny tobacco, caramel malts, citrus fruits, and light alcohol in the finish. redlight (1026), Winter Park, Florida, USA Apr 18, 2008 thanks to solan! Piney resin, some molasses, and some sweetness in the aroma. Pours a very dark amber. Piney upfront, with a great great bitterness, with some sweet malts hiding in there too. slightly old but still enjoyable! dchmela (601), Orlando, Florida, USA Apr 9, 2008 Courtesy SoLan. 22oz handbottle. Pours a dark amber with little head. Big malt citrus pine aroma. Must have been very good and interesting, because my notes add that it had a "fuck socialists aroma". Whatever that means. Malty sweet hoppy over the top taste that finishes very clean. Solid. Beerlando (1134), Orlando, Florida, USA Apr 4, 2008 Courtesy SoLan. 22oz handbottle. Pours a rusty brown-orange with a minimal, wispy film at the top. Random spotty lacing dots the glass. The nose shows big pine and citrus hops, with an equally massive amount of caramel and toffee malts. There are some mildly spicy floral notes as well. The flavor moves away from pine resin, going more towards straight orange hops. The malts also emerge as even more of a factor, tipping the scale towards the hoppy barley wine side of things. Some cream comes through on the palate as well. The body is nearly full and sooth, but finishes slightly sticky. Definitely a solid brew, resembling more of a hop-laden barley wine than a double IPA. Good brew.
