COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Made to be enjoyed in moderation, this massive but well-balanced ale warms the soul on cold winter nights. Huge is the operative term, with excessive use of malt, large body, a liberal hopping rate and obvious alcohol content

(Draught) Pours a burgundy body with a moderate creamy beige head. Aroma of raisins, cherry, bread, pear, grass, and caramel. Flavor of cherry, raisins, molasses, grass, earth, and caramel malt with a bitter finish.

(draught) dark caramel color with ring of lasting off white bubbles. Nose of spicy citrus hops, slight dank, toasty caramel. Taste of well integrated hops, toasty caramel, chocolate and cocoa. Very nice creamy finish and easy to drink.

On tap at the brew pub. Pour is dark red with a beige head. After scanning the other ratings, I’m stunned we are drinking the same beer. Mine was intensely bitter and hoppy. Much more bitter than a number of pale ales I’ve had. I couldn’t taste the alcohol, which I found odd in a barley wine. There was an overpowering citrus flavor the drowned out everything besides the bitterness. It had the look and feel of a good beer, but the aroma and taste didn’t match the style I was expecting. If it were an IPA, I would have thought it was over-hopped. Maybe I got the bottom of the barrel or something. Weird.

Sampled on tap at the brewpub. The beer pours dark brown with a cream-colored head. The aroma is caramel with sweet malt and some piney hops. This is what a barleywine is supposed to smell like. The flavor is pine and citrus hops along with caramel and some alcohol. Medium mouthfeel and low carbonation.

Draught at the Draught House- solid dark purple with brown and black shades in color, some lacing from the wafer white head, aroma of funk and earth- interesting. Hits the mouth with a strong medium body, malt is there and a little bit hard, brief hop wave comes in the middle, finish is hard and warming. A little rough around the edges, but still nice.

Black-tinted plum color. Great lace. They always kill the head. Stone nose, which conjours up a mineral, earthen character. This, in in-of-itself is satisfying. Armoma also has a little black cherry. Hoppy flavor, malty, strong, and a little sugary flavor. Storng, malt finish lasts and satisfies. taste like it was aged in concrete barrels ( err, tanks ). It’s just picking up a lot of mineral flavour. Pinion-plank ending.

UPDATED: DEC 20, 2007 Nice dark brownish maroon pour to it. Smell is nicely balanced as is the taste. Hoppy, but amply malty to balance. Not too sweet, but not too hoppy and leaves you feeling like this is incredibly mild. Good flavors and a good "sessionable" barleywine.

Excellent Barleywine. Shining, thick copper goo. Frothy dense head that could hold a quarter or two. Laces all the way down the glass to the last drop. Fabulous aroma. Blue cheese and lots of it. This was a first for me from a barleywine, but the funkiness of it was really quite appealing. It isn’t all abrasive fruitiness though, the malts are soft enough in their own right to provide a pear and apricot background that is both subtle and calming. The aromas on this guy are really quite satisfying. Well balanced and interesting all at once. On the first sip the blue cheese jumps out of the glass and then falls slightly under the weight of the hop whallop as the malts die off slowly. Apricots and bitterness linger. If I brewed a barleywine I would want it to taste like this.

Pour is nice clear amber with a thin tan head...smell is delicate with some caramel notes...no hops in the aroma, but they are in the flavor...lots of caramel and molasses with a nice subtle bitterness to clear out he sweet...

WOW! This was a treat! Solid delicous taste! Had a dark rust color, sweet smell, and you can’t really taste the alcohol, very tasty and crisp for a barleywine
