Draught @ Brauereigasthof Drei Kronen [28/6/2016]. Poured into a tall glass mug or into a ceramic mug. Hazy medium amber, small frothy white head, mostly diminishing, good lacing; aroma pale malts, grain, yeast, basement; taste light light heavy sweet and light bitter, malty, grainy, caramel and buttery notes; sweetbitter finish, light spicy touch; medium body, oily to creamy texture, soft carbonation; overall a decent lager, perhaps a bit too creamy...

Multiple samples at the brewpub over the years, most recently in Dec. 2015: Hazy brick-rust appearance. Clingy and tight eggshell head. Restrained aromas of toasted hay and breadcrust with hints of plum and wax. Fairly soapy, as well. Soft and fluffy carbonation. Flimsy body. Deep maltiness unfolds with rich breadcrust flavors right out of the gate alongside a subtle and well-integrated plumlike twang. Waxy slickness sneaks in, however, and negates the toasty dextrins. Residual sugars emerge in the form of raisiny fruitiness and lend just enough depth to round out the body, though the malt comes across as rudimentary and papery / damp haylike at times. Malt does show flashes of sophistication, though, as the Munich and Caramel interplay reveals a pecanlike earthiness. Finishes papery with some plum jelly and minimal Spalt-derived woodiness from the scant hop presence. These later batches are pretty much how I remember this tasting in the past. The potential is certainly here, and thankfully there is no diacetyl or DMS, but the execution comes up short. A mostly basic example.

Draught at the brewery. Dark gold to orange, cloudy, with a tall, airy head. Slightly yeasty nose, oranges, biscuits, some honey and pineapple. Doughy and a bit worty, oranges, peaches, melon, pineapple. Nice fruitiness. Decent. Not great, but pretty solid, unlike the pils. Soft, herbal, prickly bitterness. Better than they have been doing lately, according to the recent ratings.

Tap @ Brewpub. Pours clear dark golden with a white head. Melted lurpak, insane butter. Thin and really nasty!

On tap at the brewery. Now no one recommended this place and said the beer was full of diacetyl. The lager is fine not too exciting but some ok hop sting on the finish. In fact it’s fine. Aroma is ok and it’s a little empty in the mouth but then I am comparing it to other Franconia beer. Compared with virtually every other 4.2% lager in the world this is outstanding. Good enough. Malty slightly hoppy slightly empty

Draft. Served in a ceramic mug with a fluffy, slightly off white head. Pale grainy malty base, light earthy hops, and just a hint of sweetness. Not bad.
