Tap @ the brewery. Pours clear amber with a medium, staying, creamy, white head. Aroma has smoke, salami, smoked ham, light caramel. Medium to low carbonation, fairly light and dry mouthfeel. Flavour has smoke, light meat, some caramel. Not really that good...

On draught at the brewery tap. You can smell that it is Weyermann’s smoked malt but the balance is good. Sweetish beer with enough smoke to make it assertively smokey yet not so much as to drown it - as can happen.

Draft. Pours amber orange with an off white head. Sweet and lightly smoked malts, almost bready in a way. Lighter earthy undertones and a hint of sweet toffee. Good stuff.

Tap at the Gasthof, Memmlesdorf - 28/04/12. Dark mid amber in colour with a medium frothy white-ish head. Toasted smoked malts on the nose, subtle smoking, woody charr. Flavours as per nose with a little carmel/toffee, malts are heavier in the taste and the smoking again subtle. Crisp finish with a little lingering smoke. Good Rausch.

On tap in Memmelsdorf, 18/07/2012. Deep copper in colour with a big, off-white head. Pleasant, wood smoke aroma with some caramel sweetness. Flavour was similar, with some more malty sweetness to balance the smoke, and a decent, bitter finish. Good.

Tap at the brewery tap. A pretty reddish amber with a lacing tan head. Beautiful smoke nose. Watery body with consistent but very gentle smoke, more in the style of Spezial than Schlenkerla. Quite repeatable! Somewhat dry.

TAR (2346) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - DEC 27, 2011
Draught at the Memmelsdorf brewpub in Nov, 2011: Garnet with a faint glimmer of golden. Fragmented off-white head. Sharply medicinal and hammy nose with notes of plum jelly and overripe dark fruit. Soft prickles of spacious carbonation. Slippery body. Sharp, salty and medicinal with a dull smoke character and lifeless, papery maltiness beneath. Very flabby throughout, and the malt is continually devoid of any depth or softness of texture. Finishes apple jelly-laden with merely a scratch of smoke to combat the rotting fruit and plasticlike yeast astringency. This is downright poor.

Ernest (5627) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - DEC 25, 2011
Rated at 3 Kronen Nov 2011. Head is mostly diminishing. Body is medium to dark amber. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted grain), with notes of smoked meat, kumquat, plum. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, syrupy texture, lively/soft carbonation. Straightforward with some off sourness in the nose. Not much to balance the syrupy sweetness. The best thing about this one is the rampant diacetyl in the other three beers wasn’t evident here.

Bottle… Mostly clear, light copper lager with a small, creamy, off-white head. Good retention. The aroma offers gentle smoked caramel malt, biscuit and toffee. Medium-bodied with a skim-milk mouthfeel and dancing carbonation. The flavor leans toward the sweet side of balance and provides toffee, tea biscuit and mildly smoked caramel malt. Finishes moderately sweet and lightly smoky. Bottle courtesy of Plovmand!
