Draught at the Memmelsdorf brewpub in Nov, 2011: Garnet with a faint glimmer of golden. Fragmented off-white head. Sharply medicinal and hammy nose with notes of plum jelly and overripe dark fruit. Soft prickles of spacious carbonation. Slippery body. Sharp, salty and medicinal with a dull smoke character and lifeless, papery maltiness beneath. Very flabby throughout, and the malt is continually devoid of any depth or softness of texture. Finishes apple jelly-laden with merely a scratch of smoke to combat the rotting fruit and plasticlike yeast astringency. This is downright poor.

Rated at 3 Kronen Nov 2011. Head is mostly diminishing. Body is medium to dark amber. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted grain), with notes of smoked meat, kumquat, plum. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, syrupy texture, lively/soft carbonation. Straightforward with some off sourness in the nose. Not much to balance the syrupy sweetness. The best thing about this one is the rampant diacetyl in the other three beers wasn’t evident here.

Bottle… Mostly clear, light copper lager with a small, creamy, off-white head. Good retention. The aroma offers gentle smoked caramel malt, biscuit and toffee. Medium-bodied with a skim-milk mouthfeel and dancing carbonation. The flavor leans toward the sweet side of balance and provides toffee, tea biscuit and mildly smoked caramel malt. Nice and fresh, smoky aroma. Flavour is fresh and smoky. Also some grain does appear. Nice and refreshing!

Bottled@Tuulensuu, Tampere. Amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is smoked wet wood, mild leathery notes, some toasted and fruity notes. Flavour is caramel, leather, some slight toasted and smoked wet wooden notes. Mild bitterness lurking as well.

Pours brownish orange with a medium foamy head. Aroma has notes of butter, rye bread and smoke. Taste is smoky with notes of ham, rye and malts. Smooth finish has hints of ham. Okay.

Pours a copper colour with a small white head. Aroma of smoked malts, some ham and toffee. Flavour of smoked malts, wet wood, ham, hops, toffee and some mild spices. Very smooth mouthfeel with a lovely fruity, smoky finish. Enjoyable, easy and smoky.

0.5 l bottle at Tuulensuu, Tampere. Copper color. The aromas of toffee and dry tarry smoke. Sweet toffeish, smoky and woody flavor with earthy and tarry notes. Nice drinkable rauchbier.

Medium coarseish beige head. Gorgeous brownish amber body with light carbonation. Roasty caramelly dusty aroma with smoky notes. Wonderfully vivid and balanced. Dry-sweetish smoky roasty caramelly taste with dusty notes. Smoke is clearly present, but not overpowering, and blends well with the other elements. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dry grainy roasty smoky aftertaste with chocolatey notes. Excellent! Highly drinkable and extremely well balanced, yet interesting and unusual. (0.5l bottle, Ølbutikken, Copenhagen.)

bottle from ølbutikken clear dark brown, smooth beige head. mild smoked aroma, meat, malts, faint green herbal note, mild and delicious slighlty smoked aroma. flavor is faint meat (eggs?), faint smoke, caramel, malts, only a faint hoppy note that makes it a little flowery sweet. low bitterness.
