Cask at the NWAF, Manchester. Copper pour with a white head. Spicy nose. Fruity-spice flavour, a splash of cinnamon. Dry, spicy finish.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Benjii (2403) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - JAN 20, 2012
Supreme Champion Winter Beer of Britain 2012. On cask at the 2012 NWAF, Manchester. Pours a chestnut colour with a fair, light tan head. Nutty aroma of caramel, chocolate, alcohol and Weetabix malt. Similar flavours, a little thin, with treacle fairly prominent. Mild carbonation and an oily mouth-feel. OK.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Oakes (10191) - Gibsons, British Columbia, CANADA - JUL 29, 2011
Light brown. No head. Hazy. Malt-accented aroma with light fruitiness. A little bit of chocolate. Finishes moderately bitter. Decent strong ale.
3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 bhensonb (7586) - Woodland, California, USA - MAY 14, 2011
Cask at The Driftwood Spars. Pours a dark coppery brown with a creamy beige head. Aromas of floral and caramel. Flavor is floral, caramel, mildly spicy with a light hint of treacle. So it finishes bitter and sweet together.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Beershine (4729) - The Sunshine State, Florida, USA - FEB 14, 2011
Bottle. Dark red-brown, scant head. Aroma of overripe cherries. Soft palate. Nice malt character throughout, rich bread, complex sugars and dark fruit. Finishing pleasantly dry, with just the right amount of strength in the body. Another one that would be excellent on cask that is just ok in the bottle.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 downender (4389) - Bristol, Gloucestershire, ENGLAND - FEB 7, 2011
Cask-conditioned at the Cornish Beeriodical, the Seven Stars, Bristol 7/02/2011. Medium brown with a slight, off-white head. As DruncanVeasey mentions, the key thing here was a 6.5% ABV beer managing to show zero alcohol. This was the final beer of my evening, given the strength, but was blown away by the earlier, weaker beers, including Keltek’s 4% mild. Sweet, a bit fruity and forgettable. A waste of alcohol.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 DruncanVeasey (5150) - NUNEATON, Blue Square Prem, Warwickshire, ENGLAND - APR 1, 2010
Cask handpull, Driftwood Spars Hotel, Trevaunance Cove, Cornwall. Clear russet with a lacing beige top. Bag of orange and apple fruitiness aroma, maybe some strawberry Chewits; flavour overripe apple, toasted nuts, clean biscuity malt, dab of orange liqueur. Excellent, easy-drinking ESA with a hint of clovey spice and zero alcohol showing. Could happily slug a few pints back, and regret it.
