COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The first in Driftwood’s Bird of Prey Wild Ale series, this sour ale was inspired by the Coopers Hawk that took residence in the brewery for a full 24 hours. Brewed in its honour, this wild ale spent a year in a mix of American and French oak wine barrels. Tart and funky, this beer can be aged a very long time, but is equally enjoyable now.

On tap at Alibi 300. Pours murky copper orange. Aroma of sour fruits, funk, vanilla and oak. Flavour is the same. Well balanced sweetness, pleasant to drink.

deep amber color, lots of granny apples, cinammon, baked apples pie . Sour but not over the top. Tons of fresh nutmeg and cinammon in an aplle cinammon pie. Not as sour as I want, but amazing depth. Thanks Mike for providing this very special beer.

From a bomber at Café 3 små rum, Göteborg, Sweden. Clear amber, medium off-white head. Woody red berries aroma with some vinegar and red apples. Light to medium bodied, medium carbonation. Semi sweet, medium acidity, some bitterness. Interesting and highly drinkable.

Sample from bottle courtesy of a friend @ 3 Små Rum. Pours hazy reddish orange with a small creamy off-white head that quickly dissipates while leaving a small trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and sour with burnt sugar, vinegar, red and black currants, wood, lemon zest and horse blanket. Taste is sour and slightly sweet with wood, red currants, raspberries, strawberries, vinegar, burnt sugar, hay, funk and hints of barnyard. Mouthfeel is tart, slightly dry and medium bodied. Finish is dry, sour and tart with black currants, wild strawberries, hay and lemon zest. Very nice, balanced and surprisingly complex.

K, I cracked. Had to drink this. How is torontoblue holding out??? Let’s get to it. Hazy orange amber liquid with a bright white head that fizzed good then settled comfortably above skim and left good lacing. Smells great! I can notice the wine lingerings but only when smelling and pulling my nose back away from the glass. Not sure why that works but it works really well. Muffins, sourness, cherry notes, almost vinegar, a bit malty but now I’m getting more of the cherry -don’t confuse this with any sort of dominating fruit aroma. Thankfully this does not smell like the 35$ of cheese that gramity mutilated at RBAG. A bit woody or earthy.. either or... it’s very nice and soothing. Tasty as well... I knew this would be. This is going down so freaking quick - obviously they need to brew waaaaay more of this. Sourness but not overly .. just in a way that makes you crave litres of this over and over... just seems like a tease to me. Minor funk at this point of the bottling, the lip smacking goodness has created an endless salivation issue. The wine and oak notes are there along with the funk that comes in after mid sip, lingers, fades, lingers more and then fades to an odd malt finish. Down the hatch. sour lingerings and for whatever reason a hint of hops?Odd... I just checked other reviews and here and there this was notes. no bid deal - it doesn’t ruin anything. Soft teeth, minorly displaced balance. This is an excellent beer and without looking at my stats - the best of the best from Driftwood. Slante!

Cheers to microakes for the procurement. Hazy orangey-amber. Not much head. Aroma of wood, balsamic, cherries. Soft body and medium tartness. The flavours are fairly vinous with background maltiness and woody, pungent barrel finish. There is a bit too much bitterness initially and that takes away from what would ideally be a sweet-sour balance. Interesting brew.

Bomber, thanks to microakes. Rich ruby color, looks very nice. Aroma is nuanced, mellow, accessible, and balanced. There is a considerable amount of sweetness, from cherry meat, mashed overripe strawberries, quince paste, and crackery malts in addition to the subtle wood barrel of Flemish sour undertone. The body is a little bit thin or light. Honestly it’s not the most sophisticated beer in the world. Occasionally a little yeastiness manifests in both aroma and palate that sort of detracts but not in a serious way. Yet there is no sediment at the bottom of the bottle. But the flavors are extremely well-balanced. The sourness never becomes acetic or acidic, remaining in check by the balancing nature of the fruit. Again getting quince/membrillo as well as overripe, mashed, fermented strawberry. With the light body, this reminds me a little of a sangria, albeit one that has been sitting in a wood barrel. The wood presence is as integrated as everything else in this balanced beer, lending dry woody flavors to the finish that are light on the tongue. Very drinkable. The alcohol is well-hidden and yet it’s got enough kick to make it feel special. I’m getting the sense this beer might improve with ±2 years of cellaring. Well done!

On tap at The Alibi Room for their 300th Beer Menu, pours a cloudy bronze / orange / red with a small beige head. Aroma of sour red fruits, a bit of worcestershire sauce, subtle oak barrels and some light vinous notes. Flavour is pleasantly sour / tart, with sour red fruits, oak barrels, dry zesty notes and some subtle vinous qualities. Medium complexity with a soft body. Very nice, but not worthy of the local praise it’s been getting.
