Crooked Coast is inspired by the original Alt-style beer of Dusseldorf; “Alt” is German for old and the style a vestige of the days before lager yeast was discovered, when ales were what German Brewers produced. A marriage of the aromas of both German noble hops and caramel Munich malt, this quintessential session beer is defined by its delicate malt-hop balance.

Appearance: clear pale to medium amber with two fingers of rocky tan head, excellent retention and lacing. (5/5) Aroma: caramel, bready malt, grass, earth. (7/10) Taste: medium-light sweet, medium bitter. (7/10) Palate: medium body, moderate carbonation, short duration finish. (4/5) Not malt-forward on the nose as such, but certainly malt-emphatic. The maltiness and the hops play off each other well, with neither clearly dominating the profile. However, the taste has much less sweetness than the nose would suggest, and the overall feel is surprisingly dry. Very well done, if ultimately somewhat light for my tastes. (16/20)

Another enjoyable Driftwood brew. Malty bready and dry and pretty much a god damn solid beer to drink massive amounts of while contemplating illegal activities. Caramel, big lack of sweetness, tasty bitterness of whatever form, light spice trick, grassy. Big flavours that are not big. Dig dis.

Not bad, but not a favorite from driftwood. Has some interesting notes of malts and hops, mostly some dark nutty caramel flavours.

650ml brown bottle. Deep golden colour, lightly hazy. Fat white cap. Nose has caramel, grains/bread. Taste has caramel and bread with grass. Finishes grassy with light bitterness and dryness. Good.

Really enjoyable. Pours a dark amber with a thick, soapy beige head. Toffee and nuts with a rich nutty flavour profile. Aroma is rather mild with tons of caramel and a light fruity note. Nutty and toffee notes are heavy but give a nice smoothness to this brew. Well balanced, a bit sweet and malty but an easy drinking brew.

UPDATED: NOV 24, 2015 Prima biertje met een hoppige nasmaak maar zeer goed te doen. Wat donkere karakter met lekkere aroma.

2013-05-04 - bottle via my niece, enjoyed in Port Colborne with my family to toast my father’s memory - we had just held his memorial service earlier in the afternoon. It was a lovely day. Alt bier. Hazy and bubbly cloudy burnt copper with an average tan creamy/foamy head. Grainy for sure, a little light fruit, some light acidity (hops?), some alcohol presence - a little phenolic, and weirdly I got maple sweetness. After the sweet and grainy aroma, I was astounded at how pervasively and aggressively bitter the taste was surprisingly bitter; bone dry, no sweetness at all (go thirsty drinking it!), taste reminds me of drought grass - the bitterness of despair, almost scorched by the sun .. not much alcohol, mostly just bitter, some strong alphas from the hop varieties. Solid, chewy mouthfeel, long, long grassy finish and an odd peppercorn heat in the aftertaste. Really interesting beer, glad I had someone to share the bomber with me! Thanks, Jen, for lugging this from BC.

Hazy amber color; huge head, difficult to pour. Light malt aroma with very light esters. Smooth mouthfeel; malt and caramel flavor, dry and sandy/dusty; average bitterness.
More Amber Ale than Altbier.

Pours a fairly clear copper with a fair white head that leaves good lace. Aroma is Munich malt, floral, caramel and brown sugar. Taste is caramel, biscuits, earthy, grassy, and a medium bitterness.
