Three times the malt bill and five times the hops of a normal strength beer, this Barleywine tests the limits of our brewhouse and our backs! But the real struggle is in getting this massive brew to completely ferment, a true test of our skill and the vigor of our yeast. Consisting of 98% Pale Malt (with a bag CaraMunch thrown in for color) and just one hop variety, Columbus, this beer showcases these two basic ingredients in their most concentrated state. 32°

Enjoy this very special beer young, but save a few bottles for future winters. Enjoy not too cold, say about 13C!

Thanks to cards04 for sharing. Reminds me a hot of half pints demeters harvest in that it's sweeter like a wheat wine. Murky brown colour. Hoppy sweet honey and strawberries aroma. Taste is on the sweet side with nice bitter hop balance. Nice beer.

Bottle shared at the RBWG Friday night bottle share. Thanks, Mr. Canada! 2013 vintage. Pours a clear gold with a small off-white head. Notes of leaves, citrus, honey, sugar, and a big dose of sweet malts. Medium-bodied, with a sweet, sticky, somewhat bitter mouthfeel and low to moderate carbonation. Didn’t quite live up to expectations.

UPDATED: APR 22, 2014 Bottle thanks to Matt! Pours a clear gold with a white head that lasts through the beer and laces nicely. Aroma has a good amount of sweet grains with a slight bit of earthiness and notes of caramel. Flavor starts sweet grains, has a bit of light fruit and a good amount of caramel backing. Bottle at RBWG 2014, thanks! Pours a clear gold with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has sweet grain and earthy bread with a bit of oak. Flavor has sweet grain with a bit of caramel, light hops and an earthiness.

RBWG14 Trip Rating #43. Bottle shared at the Friday Night Downtown Inn Bottle Share. Pours a clear amber color with a medium sized white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of pale crackery malts, floral hops and a chemical note. The taste is toffee, candied fruits and a bitter hop finish. Medium bodied, very hot and boozy, really disjointed. A disappointment.

Bottle - Vintage 2013 - Fresh this is very hoppy and bitter, which is normal for a west coast Barley Wine. I think fresh though it is a bit rough and age would do it well. Still pretty decent though, just not as good as I think it should be.

Taste from a 22oz waxed bottle. Clear golden orange color. Little white head. Couple dots of lace. Wow. Lots of C-hop in the aroma, very citrusy hop nose. Smells like a double IPA, straight up. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of soft lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Moderate sweet taste, light caramel malt. Citrusy hop flavor very evident, some pine. Ok, caramel malty, very piney hoppy barleywine. Aroma is like an older, kind of sweet dipa. Strange stuff, doesn’t work that well. Identity crisis.

Poured from 650mL bottle (2013 release - cap reads bottled Dec 13, 2013). Clear orangey yellow with dissipating white head. Quite hoppy aroma with only a touch of sweet malt. Same taste with hint of alcohol. Medium-Light body.Based on the reviews from past years’ releases, I’m a little disappointed. Tastes more like a weak DIPA (in flavour, not alcohol) than a barley wine.

2013 vintage The first thing I noticed about this year's Cellar Dweller is that it is much hoppier than in previous years. Pours a dark copper with a small off white head. A bit boozey, hoppiness balanced with a good amount of malty sweetness. Overall this isn't my favorite year for the cellar dweller, I don't think this one will get better with age, sadly. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This review is of the 2013 bottling, in a 650 ml bomber from Liquor Barn in North Burnaby. Just a quick swill here and some initial notes to be expanded after further sampling. Light in color for a barleywine, I must note. It’s a medium reddish amber ale, not necessarily darker than some IPAs. A bit of whitish head. Initial impressions are of prominent citrus hop with decent malt backing. Evident alcohol of course, but the 2013 bottling is only listed at 11.6%, not the whopping 14% on the main listing. This would make it about the same alcohol content as the 2010 bottling.
