COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Three times the malt bill and five times the hops of a normal strength beer, this Barleywine tests the limits of our brewhouse and our backs! But the real struggle is in getting this massive brew to completely ferment, a true test of our skill and the vigor of our yeast. Consisting of 98% Pale Malt (with a bag CaraMunch thrown in for color) and just one hop variety, Columbus, this beer showcases these two basic ingredients in their most concentrated state. 32°

Enjoy this very special beer young, but save a few bottles for future winters. Enjoy not too cold, say about 13C!

?date?2009? Semi-opaque copper with stable tight beige head. Looks a lot nicer than expected. Smells fruity, even some tropical fruits. I’m finding lychee, as well as plums, pears, and dried pineapple. Great fruity aromas are also unexpected, this does not come across as being a dowdy chewy barleywine. Smooth body, is thick and rich with a tannic finish. Flavors are well-integrated and include the crust of heavy bread. The fruit from the aromas has been transformed into rich mellow malts, rich brown sugar, and brandy. Lovely.

Vintage 2010 opened on May 31st, 2012. The beer pours a deep an rich red-orange pale ale color. The nose screams raisin followed by oak. It has some sweetness, warm spices and booze on the nose. The pallet is sweet bourbon with hints of vanilla, followed by oak and a subtle finish of bitter chocolate and a hint, just a hint of coffee. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Super bold beer. Huge malt and hop flavours, sweet and bitter. Extremely heavy and I think best shared .

[bottle at the Alibi Room, 2008 edition (cellared 3 years] Excellent floral hops aroma with some rye bread and coconut oil accents. Haxy dark red-orange under thin, bubbly white. Potent cereal grain flavour with fresh raisins and a little plum. Good bitterness to balance the sweet malt. Slight woody character; very complex. Dry finish, moderate carbonation, moderately bitter finish with the sweetness which is almost chocolaty.

Bomber from Malt & Vine. 14% Pours dark ruddy copper with a beige smear for head. Nose tingling aroma. Seems to be a mix of roast malt, citrus and treacle. Full bodied. There’s a little heat. Not much. Flavor is brown sugar with some slightly dark fruit - tho maybe that’s a citrus treacle combo. It is very tasty, and finishes thick and mildly sweet. Very warming! Rerate/rethink in 60 secs. It’s really a pretty hoppy finish. More so than many barley wines. Gets tastier as it warms.

Had at Brouwer’s. Ruby/amber/orange, beige head. Aroma is mostly hop forward but still has a lot of dark fruit and toffee sweetness. Taste of pine bitterness, lots of citrus, solid malt sweetness but this seems like more of a really malty DIPA, not to say that’s a bad thing however.

On tap at Brouwer’s Hard Liver ’12. 2011 vintage. Pours a transparent red. Fruity, with some caramel on the nose. A very strong rosemary/sage note in the flavor -- extremely herbal for a barley wine. Some fruit and nuts, but very a very strong hop contingent in this one. Glad I had a taste at a festival -- this one is *far* overpriced in the stores.

Bottle, 11.8%. Good caramel aroma. Hazy dark red brown colour. Very small white head. The flavour is quite alcoholic. Has a good caramel flavour, from the hops, I guess. Too alcoholic.
