COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Four months in Kentucky Bourbon barrels has transformed this formidable Russian Imperial Stout to somewhere beyond the event horizon; the result is a beer of ’infinite density’ and compelling complexities. ABV initially 11.8%.

Bottle, via trade with dresden (thanks Steve!)-- my first beer of 2015, shared with Grippitis and others. This is the 2012 vintage. Hearty near black pour with a low dense reddish-brown head. Rich aroma of bitter chocolate, sweet bourbon, dark roast. Heavy body with good flavour density and a velvety mouthfeel; flavours of bitter chocolate, black malts, vanilla, caramel. Great balance here, very enjoyable brew.

Vintage 2014.

Pours jet black with a loose heavy swirl of burnt tan head. Huge forward bourbon nose, sweet and caramelly. Creamy thick body with soft carb. Velvety velvety smooth. Sweet mid palate showing plenty of residual sugars, along with caramel and vanilla from the barrel and a nicely balanced roastiness.

Noir.

"Strange aroma, especially out of he bottle, for a bourbon imperial stout. Loads of graham cracker, which lessens a little when poured and is not present in the flavor. Super super smooth for 11%+, if not as big as the imperials I’ve gotten used to. Smooth cocoa and roast with a pretty mellow bourbon influence. Good but not great."

Bottle of the 2013 thanks to gnashville. A dark cola pour with ruby highlights. Sweet, oaky vanilla aroma a bit boozier. Sweet meaty dark candied fruits a bit of heat and a solid bourbon character. This has more of a barrel character than the 2014.  Ap 4 P 4 Ar 8 t 9 o 16 2014 is a bit paler but has a thicker head of foam. The aroma is sweet malty, nutty, it had heat that burns my nostrils somewhat. It tastes much simpler than the 2013, lots of heat and some slick sweet oakiness. It seems more sugary than the 2013. Ap 4 p 4 Ar 7 t 7 o 15 For me the 2013 is the clear winner.

My Bottom Line:
This devious Imperial Stout shares plenty of molasses and dark chocolate before light fruitiness and alcohol heat sneak up on you.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy head of foam tops the blackness.
-Aftertaste is a decadent blend of chocolate-y malt sugars and alcohol warmth.
-The subtle fruitiness is reminiscent of blueberries.
-The mouthfeel is rich and supple.

Bottle.

2014 bomber from CANBIF 2014. Black with a light brown head that fades to a faint ring. Charred malt, chocolate, some anise, slightly boozy but considering its 14.6 not too overwhelming, semi-sweet on the aroma (becomes overwhelming on the palate though), light oak, mild carbonation and moderate+ body, bit of a burn on the finish. Would like to try this with a bit of time on it. Tasty though.

A 650 ml bomber at Bitter in Vancouver, split with a friend. This is the 2014 version, if anyone’s counting. Pitch black, minimal tan head. Unable to get much nose here, but sweet and fruity. Chocolate and licorice notes abound. Very sweet and fruity for a stout. It’s an imperial, but not your everyday imperial. Very rich and smooth overall. A bit like a good port, essentially. Very nice!

2013 bomber. Pours a low, bubbly khaki head atop a very deep brown. Cap fades pretty quickly. Aroma is pretty much all malt with a hint of bourbon. Licorice dominates the aroma, raisin, wood, alcohol, some coffee. When 2013 was released, it was super boozy. I've had a few since then just to see how it's resting. Could use another year at least. Really needs to calm down. Taste is very sweet, with the sightings of great bitterness that follow. The malts coat the mouth heavily, and the only reprieve is a good dryness. It's been better previous releases, but this one may turn out to be great with a few more years under the stairs.
