COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The second in our local malt series. Inspired by the Abbey beers of Belgium, the base malt is an artisan barley that is grown and malted on the Saanich Peninsula (as close to the brewery as we can get). Finishing with a healthy dose of floral hops and the distinct funk of brettanomyces, Spring Rite will evolve with some aging.

Golden-amber colour with small head. Aroma with plenty of brett funk, citrus and malt notes. Flavour is delicate, mix of citrus, light malt flavours and more brett funk, yeast flavours mixed in, very dry. Delicious. Great silky mouth feel with well balanced light flavours with much depth.

650ml bottle split with mcberko. Pours orange/brown with a small white head. Aroma citrus, grapefruit, hops, biscuit, grain. Flavour of citrus hops, some floral notes, orange peel, yeast. The hops are not as harsh as I expected. Lively flavour with a slightly dry finish. Nice

650mL bottle, split with Matts_Property, pours amber orange with a medium white head. Crisp aroma of Belgian yeast, brett, citrus, champagne and a sharp hoppy bite. Flavour of chardonnay, lemon / citrus, brett, orange peel and a hoppy finish. Bitter hoppy and dry vinous finish. Very well-done.

650ml bottle from 16th St.Liquor in West Vancouver. Pours a very clear medium gold with thin off white top and great sticky foam remaining on the glass as I drink. Aroma is mild yeast, clementine citrus, brett, some lemon. Taste is lemon, orange hop, brett, un oaked chardonnay, light yeast. Finish is lingeringly bitter and sharp. Overall, very fresh tasting and delicious...but I donít get Orval from this at all (if that was what they were going for).

(650ml bottle) Purchased at Spinnakers Spirit Merchant in James Bay for $6.61 per bottle. Firstly, when I heard about this from an EskimoDave tweet I went stark raving mad and scoured the neighbourhood for bottles even though it hadnít been released... then I did it again Monday - the day before it was released - and perplexing the staff at Hillside Liquor, Cascadia Liquor Quadra and finally Spinnakerís Spirit Merchant in Vic West. "Iím looking for the First Rite... No? The Last Rite?... Okay, quit being a dumbass - where the hell are you hiding the Third Reich?" So finally, Tuesday my dementia settled down and I got a bottle - okay, 12 bottles. Its not often that someone tells you that a good Orval-like clone has been produced. I didnít care, dropped $80 to pick up a favourite beer clone from a favourite brewer. Driftwood is a fantastic brewery with great people and very inventive, creative and ,,, well fuck a third descriptor; theyíre cool. Thatís all you need to know. And you are willing to envy me for living in such a fine beering-city in the Pacific Northwest. This beer is deeper in colour than Orval but it has a nice orange hue. Great yeasty, bretty aroma - lightly fruity and tobacco. Fun yeasty and grainy front with fortified white wine. Green weeds. Flowering with flavour. This is wonderful, playing my palate and drilling my psyche. Congratulations on a fine follow-up local malt beer!
