3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Head is initially large, frothy/creamy, off-white to light brown, mostly lasting.
Body is clear medium brown.
Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, toasted bread, roasted nuts, milk chocolate), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers, herbs), with notes of toffee, scorched honey, orange peel.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter.
Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation.
Oh my god, do my eyes and nose deceive me??? Look at that big, lasting head that leaves actual LACING on the glass! Smell the rich, caramelly, nutty, toffee-and-orange peel aroma (I’m reminded of Abbaye des Rocs, believe it or not)! This is a German lager? Get out! It’s admittedly rather candy-ish and a little unusual, but it’s very expressive and delicious. Very curious to try the Helles now.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottled, BB 16 07 13, so 2 days past its date, large sample. Clear copper color, medium off-white head. Aroma of german hops, grassy and spicy, dark caramel, hint of sulphur, slight toast, hint of chocolate. Sweet and bitter taste, loads of caramel and toast, like in a good Dunkel. Quite tasty for a Dunkel actually.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Swing-top by 28.12.2012. Nose is very sweet toffee, deep ruby pour with a rocky tan head. Taste is relatively dry with red fruit around the edges, caramel and toffee in the middle, just a bit of grit and chocolate to give some heft to the medium body. There’s a mild bitterness that rounds things out.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle, at Landbierparadies, Wodanstrasse Nürnberg July 2005. Damn these ceramic mugs, possibly brown, gentle white head and moderate condition. Gentle malty aromas, soft sweet grain with a slight toastiness and delicate hop resin in the mouth and a restrained but lasting hop bitterness in the finish.
