The notes on the menu said this was from a homebrew recipe that was then brewed at Dry Dock. Apparently it won some award at the Vail Belgian and Big Beer Festival this year, whatever. My friend tells me that ragnarok is Celtic for apocalypse which I found slightly impressive. As for the beer, it was a nice ruby-red color with a creamy head on top. It smelled sweet. The taste was sweet, caramel, with a hint of bitterness. The mouthfeel was perfect, I kept swishing it around my mouth on every drink. This was a very good beer. Tasted on tap Dec. 20, 2008, 2 years old. Pour was a beautiful orangey color, tan head and tight lace, with a very mild malt and hop aroma. This one has aged well. I believe this is the last keg, and I showed up to try it based on their low quantities warning email. The flavor -- amazing apricots, leather, malt, and citrusy bitter c-hop with a nice finish. the texture in mouth was perfect. This is definitely one of the all-time top barleywines of the many I have tasted. So smooth. They tell me it is 10% ABV, but you would never know. Just wow!

On tap at the 2007 GABF: Pours a clear golden bronze with a thin ring of off-white head. Aroma of sweet caramel and toffee with a hint of light fruity esters. Body starts with nice sticky malty sweetness and good light fruity complexity with some warming alcohol toward the finish. Could use a little aging.

GABF 2007: Poured a hazy brown-amber color. Sweet and fruity aroma with notes of apples. The flavor was of old fruit and aged malt. Some piney notes. Moderate bitterness. Good warming sensation. Was told this was 11% ABV.

Draft at The Falling Rock in Denver. Poured a clear dark orange-brown color. Head was thin and off white. Aroma was fruity, but subdued overall, and reminded me of a combination of apple and pear. Syrupy sweet on the tongue. Fruity and boozy, like pear and mixed fruit liqueur. Not much complexity.

Draught at Falling Rock. Beer is clear, medium red-brown with a small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing but lasting head.
First aromatic impression is boozy, jammy fruit. Otherwise breaks down to being malty with light notes of toasted grain, biscuit, caramel, moderately weighty, slightly buttery toasted bread crust; Hoppy with light floral notes, traces of orange zest, lemon zest; Yeasty with a light note of basement; Moderate miscellaneous note of boozy black stone fruit, spicy wood and alcohol.
The flavor is moderately/heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter with a long, moderately sweet, trace bitter, lightly acidic finish.
The body is medium/full, the texture is velvety and the carbonation is soft.
Fair, not striking.

On tap @ Dry Dock poured a clear copper brown with a small lasting amber head. Aromas of toffee, light carmel and some interesting fruity notes. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, toffee, toasted malt and a hint of dark fruit with a lingering dry bitter finish.

tap. pour is maroon and frothy. this is one of those examples of why i am rating less. i enjoyed the hell out of this, but i just don’t have anything new to say. more of a sweet barleywine, loved the strawberry notes in it. chose this over the vanilla porter, and i think everyone knows how i feel about that beer. some bubblicious flavors too, a lot of candy here. some citrus that works well. a nice one, and i hope to try it again in october, if not before.
