COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
From label: 2011. Malty and complex, this big beer has a strong caramel backbone supporting oak and whiskey flavors with hints of dark fruits. The nose wafts coconut, toffee and a smooth hint of alcohol. The flavor and aroma merge, becoming one after a single sip. There is a touch of bitterness and it will age well. ----------------- Additional notes (not on label / from brewer): Dry Dock Brewery will only produce 120 cases of this beer. it will be released the first week of October. Bligh’s Barleywine Ale will be only the second seasonal beer that Dry Dock has bottled. Its first, Apricot Blonde, came out in June and will be off the shelves by the end of September. A third seasonal, Wee Heavy Scotch Ale, is slated for release on November 14. All are sold in 22-ounce bomber bottles.

Bomber, 2012 Vintage released October so this is just over a year old in the glass, and almost 2 years old from brew date. Enjoyed in a 20ounce stemmed glass at 55F

A - Pours an oaky bronze color out of the bottle. Murky brown to black in the glass.

S - Sweet, toffee like, cotton candy and whiskey booziness. Smells quite boozy.

T - Very similar to Firestone Walker Sucaba but much sweeter and much less balance. Lots of caramel, hints of coconut and licorice with cheap candy sweetness and bakers chocolate. A hint of Aunt Jemima syrup and some charred oak but not a lot. Just a bit of figs and cloves.

M - Completely flat, toffee sticky mouth feel on the swish

O - I probably won’t finish the bottle. It’s good but much too sweet for me.

Pours an extremely hazy reddish brown with almost no head but lots of tiny bubbles hitting the surface. Looks like there may be a fair amount of sediment in the bottle. Aroma of oats, raisins and hay. Rich flavor of carmel and raisins. Very smooth in the mouth. Pretty easy to drink given the very strong flavor and high alcohol content. That said, this is definitely more of a sipping beer than something you want to drink a full pint of.

Bottle from 2012:   Deep caramel, thin frothy tannish head, spotty lacing.   Certainly looks to be of some age.   Big sweet toffee and caramel nose.   Otherwise graham cracker, with a hint of whiskey and coconut.   Up front its a smooth caramel malt backing, strong, warming with some whiskey notes bringing up the backside.   Brown sugar and caramel, light coconut that I got on the nose.   Graham cracker is also present.   Smooth, but not too coating, body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Big caramel finish, a little musty, but at least this one was English all the way.   Tasty!

’12 bottle. Rusty caramel pour with a scattering of off-white foam. Aroma is decadent raisin and date with clean, dry whiskey and vanilla. Taste is clean whiskey with oak and vanilla followed by raisin and dark fruit with some hop bitterness in the finish. Smooth and coating. Good beer.

Bottle shared by beerandblues2. Pours murky brown with a caramel tint and creamy, light beige head. Aroma is caramel malts, dates, vanilla, oak, floral notes, light spice, and faint booze. Flavor is sweet bready malts, some caramel, woody notes, faint bourbon, and some dark fruit notes; dry finish with some lingering sweetness. Full body and low carbonation.

Bottle from Kevin. Pours hazy brown with a small, frothy light tan head, short retention with spare lacing. Aroma is vanilla, whiskey, oak, plum, figs, brown sugar, cookie and caramel malt, earthy and spicy hops. Flavor is whiskey, oak, vanilla, caramelized malt, light hops and medium bitterness, dark fruits and a sweet finish. Full body and light carbonation.

22 oz. bottle shared by bsuedekum- thanks again, Blake! Pours a cloudy amber color with some small beige bubbles, but really no head. Aroma of cake, cookies, brown sugar, dates, raisins, toffee, and plenty of bourbon booze. The flavor is equally boozy, with bourbon, dates, caramel, brown sugar- kind of like the bourbon-soaked holiday bread my neighbors used to make for my family. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a sweet, coating mouthfeel. Pretty good, but could stand some carbonation.

6/29/13. 22oz bottle shared by nulledge at the epic BA barleywine tasting. Amber pour with a small khaki head. Decent aroma of barrel, vanilla, oak, caramel, and some brown sugar. Flavor is lightly sweet, maybe a touch heavy on the barrel, some booze, vanilla, and sugars. Didn’t blow me away.

Excellent ba barleywine. Incredibly smooth. Bourbon is very light, doesnt have that back end bite, but makes it smooth and drinkable. Slight dark fruit. One of the best ba barleywines ive had.
