6/29/13. 22oz bottle shared by nulledge at the epic BA barleywine tasting. Amber pour with a small khaki head. Decent aroma of barrel, vanilla, oak, caramel, and some brown sugar. Flavor is lightly sweet, maybe a touch heavy on the barrel, some booze, vanilla, and sugars. Didn’t blow me away.

Excellent ba barleywine. Incredibly smooth. Bourbon is very light, doesnt have that back end bite, but makes it smooth and drinkable. Slight dark fruit. One of the best ba barleywines ive had.

22 oz bottle, 2012. Deep, clear garnet brown with a beige haze. Nose is caramel, buttered rum and bourbon banana. Hints of dark fruit and candied citrus. Drool. After the first sip i realize this could be tough to finish before the end of the Phil’s game (win!). Hot and sticky with building alcohol. Taste is caramel, vanilla and raisin that fades into bourbon and musty wood. I wish this tasted half as awesome as it smells. Maybe with some age if i get another bottle.

This 22oz bomber is courtesy of Doodler, thanks man! It pours with a clear copper body that supports a thin tan head. The aroma offers up raisins and prunes and brown sugar mixed with mild smooth bourbon notes. The taste is pretty darn smooth with prunes and raisin fruity esters sliding into firm levels of bourbon notes. At first it seems far too barrel forward but after a few ounces the balance with the beer notes came around and made for a more enjoyable experience.

Very sweet with strong flavors of caramel, bourbon, cookies, brown sugar, and raisins. Very rich and complex with minimal hop presence. Slightly less carbonated than I would like, but overall a really great barleywine.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at home. Pour is murky brownish-amber with little-to-no head. Big toffee, caramel, light coconut, a hint of vanilla, somewhat nutty, figs, raisins, and almonds in the aroma. Taste is big figs, dark fruits, with a touch of spice and coconut through the middle, with lighter notes of sweet caramel and brown sugar, ending with a light alcoholic bite on the backend. Slick mouthfeel with almost no carbonation. Not a bad barley wine, and isn’t overpowered by the barrel treatment, at all, but the fact that it barely has carbonation really hurts it IMO.

Bottle from a great trader in CO. Nice amber color with not much head. Scent and aroma is a lot of caramel, finishes a tad harsh.

This beer represents much of what I dislike about bad barleywines. As good as the style can be, if they become toffee and plum bombs, no amount of hops and alcohol will cover it up.
