2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 TAR (2236) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - JUL 31, 2007
Cask conditioned – gravity dispensed: Deep brown with chestnut hues. Off-tan head quickly fizzles into a wispy collar. Tobacco, roasted malt, peppery hops and yeast accompany the aroma. Touches of bready smoke and berry-like esters. Poorly conditioned and light in body. Prickly carbonation. Grainy and slightly alcoholic with a tannic tingle. Rather limp/underattenuated with flabby grains and abundant wetness and yeastiness plaguing the flavor and texture. Milk chocolate is lush and adds some bulkiness to the body but it carries a bit too much weight, as does the yeast. Hints of nutty malt and smoked bread poke through, but the smoke sorely lacks pronunciation. Fuzzy malts and a cola-like sweetness exaggerate the muddled and unclean nature. Finishes slightly bready yet persistently muddled, wet and unrefined with lingering yeast and soggy grains. Went in hoping I would love this, as DD serves up some solid dark beers (foreign stout and coffee-infused oatmeal, in particular), but this doesn’t wet my whistle. Lack of carbonation fails to displace any of the flabbiness and the carbonation drops out of solution immediately as it meets the palate. It’s also astringently yeasty and the malt extraction is subpar. Perhaps the next batch will show improvement?

cask at the brewery a couple weeks back. i thought i had washed these notes with my pants, but apparently not. dark brown ish black from the cask. coffee scent, similar to used grounds. the roast comes through with some cocoa in the nose also.thin mouthfeel, a bit of acrid smoke/wood taste with light hints of chocolate. some caramel in the finish. light smoke throughout this, although i thought more wood than smoke. a bit oily for me.
