3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 seymour (604) - Saint Louis, Missouri, USA - OCT 12, 2011
Tasted on tap in standard pint glass. Poured a very dark brown color with full beige head, some retention, little lace. Aromas of roasted barley, fruity yeast phenols and distant hops. Flavor is malty sweet with added complexity from non-fermentable flaked and/or roasted barley, as well as hints of toast, nuts, caramel, apricot and plums. Very light body and alcohol percentage, but a satisfying mouthfeel and tasty finish. This beer has won important industry awards and went on to become the model recipe for the 2009 American Homebrew Association’s Big Brew Day. I’ve never enjoyed a "small beer" so much, and have to admit it wouldn’t be as unique if "upgraded" to porter strength. Excellent.

Tap at Dry Dock - hazy chestnut color - nose of hazelnut, roast, toffee, light oxidation - soft carbonation in the mouth - quite dry, with moderate hard water/mineral character and ligh oxidation - suppose they were going for the authentic, British, Burton kind of character - it works pretty well - flavor of roasted nuts and toasted bread - very light bitterness on the end - milds are tough to do - I’d say they pulled it off well.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a reddish dark brown with a quickly subsiding white head. Very low carbonation. The aroma seems slightly oxidized with a bit of cardboard. Body is thin and watery but the beer finishes with medium roastedness. Not my cup of tea.

Pretty common on tap at Dry Dock, won 08 silver for good reason. Very malty and great hop spice I feel the balance of each works in perfect harmony. I do like the fact that it has a lower ABV, but I feel in a way this takes something away from the beer. At a higher ABV I think you have more of a challenge making the flavors balance than at a lower. Still a great session beer and something to appreciate.

Apparently Dry Dock won a silver at GABF last year for this beer. This was dark in color and had a nice malty smell and flavor. Super easy to drink and for some reason I found the idea of a super low alcohol beer as very cool. I could have drank three or four of these in a sitting.
