Presque horrible. (601-080413)

I am having a hard time understanding the various things other reviewers are listing as tasting in this. Mostly what I taste is strong alcohol. It smells like alcohol, there is a short burnt malt first taste and then just an overpowering strong alcohol taste. 10.8% is a high alcohol content even for an Imperial Stout but I have tasted beers of this strength that do a good job of blending the alcohol content into the overall taste of the beer. This is lacking in any subtlety or other dominant flavours to balance out the high alcoholic content.

500 ml bottle. Pours an orangeish-brownish tinted black with a thick, resilient, beige-orange head. Sexy as hell. Aroma is roast and chocolate. Flavor is much roast, coffee, black chocolate, some brown sugar. Lots of strong bitterness, reminiscent of coffee and dark chocolate. Full body, oily mouthfeel. Average carbonation. Wows in some domains, but I felt it was somewhat lacking in complexity, and slightly unbalanced - was a bit too bitter compared to its sweetness.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a rather large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with nice black chocolate undertones is quite enticing. Taste is a good mix between some lightly dry roasted malt notes with some creamy and semi-sweet black chocolate notes. Body is about average with somewhat of a creamy texture and good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Not as powerful as most example of the style but rich chocolate flavours have won me over.

Whew, that was a weird one. An appetizing tan foam climbs above the blackness. Immediately, the nose is suspicious, showcasing Belgianesque phenols amidst the roasty, rather typical chocolate/coffee grain roast. Blackberry esters remain timid in the sea of. Much higher flavor impact than the Rang 4, but frankly, balance is missing in here. The effervescence which was annoying in the 4 is almost all here again, but possibly more detrimental to a richer flavour profile. Carbonic acids pair with the spicy, highly peppery smoky phenols and the chocolatey roasted malts to render a disagreeable rubbery feel in the salty finish. So we’re sutkc with a relatively filling body, but one drained by active, large-bubbled carbonation that thins it out. To me, the yeast strain selected just does not work with the flavour profile and the intense carbonation clashes with the basic ingredients, making for a chaotic offering that is more than subpar in its category.

Bouteille 500ml.

A deep dark stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, a nice herbal chocolate with bitter herbs and smooth alcohol. In mouth, a nice herbaceous chocolate malt with light bitterness, a bit of mocha, sweet sugar, alcohol warmth. On tap at Cuvée, 2013, March 3 2012.

Correct.
