Wulfstan (395), California, USA Dec 21, 2007 Updated: Feb 5, 2008This is a nice, solid, and very satisfying & refreshing English bitter/ESB. It is amber with a medium, dense light tan head that slowly dissipates to a ring and wispy top. The aroma is rich, toasty grain, toffee, flowery hops with a pine element, and toasted bread. The taste is a solid bitter/beer character, hard to pin down otherwise in the way I like bitter. It has elements of toffee, earth/leaves, both very light, in a body that is mostly toasty malty grain and piney hops, with a clean, crips, smooth bitterness taking over after a second, followed by a nice lightly toasted grain finish. It is crisp and clean, with great bittersweet balance, and a fruity hint. It’s a little less dry and bitter than Black Sheep Ale, but also a tad less clean and aromatic. shrubber85 (2241), Wallhalben, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany Aug 5, 2004 A very nice flowery hops aroma. Tan with a light brown head. Hops are much lighter in flavor - suprisingly mild but with a full body. A very nice bitter. Whelk (123), Sheffield, England Jun 20, 2007 Bottle--known as Dutchy Originals Organic English Ale in the US, it pours a deep coopery-ruby with a creamy off-white head. Aroma is earthy, light citrus fruit and malt. Flavor is caramel, light orange/fruity, and is quite smooth. Clean, crisp, slightly bitter with a flavorful dry finish. Medium-bodied mouthfeel, nice level of lively carbonation and I really like the hops in this stuff. In a class of its own, I dig it. Sigmund (1817), Hafrsfjord, Norway Aug 28, 2004 (500 ml bottle, bought in Denmark). Amber colour, moderate head. Lovely hoppy aroma, hints of heather, tobacco and spices. Flavour is nutty and biscuity, a hint of toffee but not really sweet, good bitterness which lingers in the aftertaste. Very nice.
