HogcliffeLenny (155), Christchurch, Dorset, England Feb 25, 2008 Bottle 500ml from Waitrose, Christchurch. Pours a clear reddy brown/deep bronze colour with a small white head. The head had dissipated within a couple of minutes. Has the aroma of summer berries with a hint of wet cardboard. The taste was creamy toffee/berries, with a bitterness following on. Quite smooth, you hardly the alcohol content (6.2%abv). I found it had soapy mouthfeel to it, which put me off slightly. Still, it is an honest pint and well worth a try. Earlier Rating: 11/13/2007 Total Score: 4.1 Bottle 500ml through Ocado. A good burst of caramel malts and dried fruits greeted me on opening the bottle. Pours a clear dark coppery colour with a small off-white head. Nothing too overpowering about this Winter Ale; a fine blend of caramel malts, dried dark fruits and a hint of toffee. Finishes with a good hoppy bitterness. Excellent on the palate and not too heavy. I drank this throughout last summer and I found it very drinkable and refreshing. This is, in my opinion, the best of the Duchy ales.

Dark amber colour with off-white head looks great - it’s all downhill from there, however. Aroma mostly of caramel malt. Thin body for the ABV. Dull and boring with an unpleasant, chemical aftertaste. JonMoore (1551), Loughborough, Leicestershire, England Aug 18, 2008 Amber coloured with a slim beige head. Strong fruity aroma with spices and floral hops. Flavours are malts, caramel, dark fruits and spices with some alcohol in the finish. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Pretty good. greenmanalishi (214), Leicestershire, England Aug 6, 2008 (redirected from ’select ale’) this pours a clean mid-amber with a decent off-white head. aroma is hoppy and floral, flavours matching in aftertaste adding dark fruits and a honey/caramel taste.
