(Rating #492)

One of 16 beers my friends brought to me from London. Seeing "Beechwood Matured" and "Premium Bier" on the label of the 0.51 liter bottle scared me at first since the only other beer I know with that description is a well-known fizzy yellow macro. Looking further, I noticed the bier was brewed in Germany, so I knew there would be no adjuncts, at least. The bier poured a clear, orange gold with light carbonation feeding a light foamy head that dissipated into a permanent collar. I lingered on the clean, lager nose for a brief moment before the first sip. The taste had slightly sweet malts up front with notes of caramel. A mild hop bitterness balanced and lingered into the finish where I noticed a birch syrup taste which I’ll chalk up to the beechwood. The bier also had a pleasant, full mouthfeel and was quite enjoyable and refreshing - certainly not the clone I orginally mistook it to be.

Rød-orange øl købt i Tyskland. Smagen er humlet og caramel agtig ag mere rund end en classic. Duften er humlet. Kulsyreniveau godt. Generel god øl, selvom den minder meget om en sød classic

UPDATED: MAY 9, 2006 500 ml bottle, as "Duckstein Rotblondes Oberbräu", bought at KaDeWe, Berlin. Seems to be brewed at Holsten Brauerei, Hamburg (my bottle), as well as Feldschlösschen Braunschweig (both Carlsberg owned). Amber colour, large and lasting off-white head, some lacing. Caramel aroma with some flowery aromatic hops, notes of brown bread too. Moderate carbonation, soft malty flavour wth some brown bread notes, decent hops in the finish. Pleasant and easy drinking "altbier" (well, it’s top fermented, and it’s German).

UPDATED: MAY 8, 2006 (0.4L from Tap) Good looking copper coloring with a tan head. Carmel flavoring was very pronounced. Also an easy beer to drink. I also wouldn’t really call it an altbier.

Bottle. Pour a copper colour with a thick longlasting off-white head. Malty aroma with some floral hints. Malty flavor with hoppy bitterness and some hints of caramel. Has a dry and long bitter aftertaste.
