3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Elwood (2552) - Leesburg, Virginia, USA - APR 15, 2012
Serving: 12 oz. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours a deep gold color with just a hint of haze and a very small, stark white head. The nose has notes of honey and florals. Light and perfumey. The flavor is a little sweet up front with some old banana peel, stale clove, and Fuji apple notes coming on strong. Pretty odd for a hefe. Light to medium body with average carbonation leading to a slight sweet finish. Not my favorite for the style.

Sitting and drinking with my brother in law a bubbly left this beer here over the summer so it’s 5 or 6 months old.Pours with almost no head and yellow to orange in color.Very thin and a little boring.Aromas of wheat and a touch of citrus.I get the banana flavor but not the clove.Over all not one of the best of its style.

12oz bottle as a trade extra. Hazy golden-yellow-orange in color with a small white head that leaves a thick foam ring after settling. The aroma is somewhat typical for the style with banana, clove, and a little lemon zest. The flavor is pretty typical with average sweetness. Banana, clove, spice, and citrus. Nice tingly carbonation with a light feel that adds to the drinkability. You know, it’s tough for this style to wow me these days like it did when I was a BMC guy in college. This one is well-done but does not exactly separate itself from the peloton. A nice summer beer nonetheless.

12oz bottle. Poured a hazy deep golden color with a bright white two inch head. Light aroma of bananas, citrus and a bit of floral hops. Tastes of banana, mild sweet grains, and floral hops that finishes with a mild dry spicey clove kick. Mouthfeel is very light and refreshing, with crisp carbonation.

3.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Heathen (1386) - Wilmington, Delaware, USA - AUG 20, 2011
THOUGHTS: Very nice American version of a hefeweizen. A little more intense than the German types, but it had the same types of flavors unlike many American interpretations of the style.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a hazy, light to medium brownish orange with an average to large, fluffy, off-white head that nearly fully diminished and left only fair lacing. The aroma was light candy and wheat; hints of burnt caramel; moderate to heavy clove, cotton candy, banana and bubble gum from the yeast; crazy tropical fruits, orangey citrus, peaches and a lot of stuff that is just hard to explain. The flavor was moderately sweet, lightly acidic and slightly sour; while the finish was moderate to heavily acidic, lightly sweet and sour with a little bit longer than average duration. Overall the flavor was a bit watered down, but there was wheat, candy, banana, other tropical fruit, tons of yeast, a little caramel a little clove, and orange. The light to medium body was sort of creamy, but also watery with soft carbonation and a dry and lightly astringent finish.
