sunevdj (1347), Copenhagen, Denmark May 9, 2008 Bottle at toncatcher’s. Pours a dark brown with a yellowish head. Light sweetness with some bitternes. Also a bit of tartness(?) Light hoppy notes. Hint of cask wood and coffee. Medium bodied. Soft carbonation.
Retorp (2148), Tampa, Florida, USA Jul 18, 2008 I know the bottle was infected, but as I have had difficulty obtaining another bottle I’m going to hold this rating here until I can try it again.
The aroma is tart and sickly sweet fruit, but all the dark roasted aromas you expect are beneath that. The body is black with a decent mocha head. Tart turned fruit. Sickly tasting. Soured and off with some muddled dark roast and chocolate flavors. The oak aged version I had was in great shape.
fordest (1655), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Jun 28, 2008 Thanks to Naven for sharing this at toncather’s tasting. Aromas of chocolate and burnt malts. Flavors were similar with hints of coffee and more burnt malt flavors. Pretty tasty. railcat1 (482), Hammond, Indiana, USA Jun 12, 2008 This poured a dark chocolate brown with a big coffee flavor and a nice hint of roasted malts as it warmed the abv showed up but was not that strong and had some good flavors come out also.CHEERS! Naven (689), San Diego, California, USA May 12, 2008 With all the talk about infection, I was very worried opening this. It definitely had a sourness on the nose and in the flavor, but it’s tough to say whether or not this was due to some sort of infection or if this was the intention. Either way, it was still pretty good. A full bodied, nice stout with some lingering hoppiness and sourness.
