3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at Arundel Mills back in November. Starts with a suprisingly sweet chocolate aroma and taste. Fades to a pleasant amount of bitter that lingers a while. Nice beer.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark brown coloured body with a thick, five centimetre tall, soapy tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, grass, light hops, alcohol and quite a bit of milk. Medium-bodied; Assertive roasted malt flavour with licorice, oatmeal, anise and caramel all noticeable at first which slowly fade to pungent hops, alcohol and a good amount of earthy bitterness. Aftertaste shows more character than the initial tastes with milk, oatmeal, pitted fruits, caramel and deep metallic bitterness percolating. Overall, a good Black IPA that borders on a porter, but has a good complex finish that works well with the style. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 24-October-2012 for US$1.79 sampled at home in Washington on 18-December-2012.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
On draft at DuClaw in Bowie, MD.
The beer is dark brown, approaching blackness, with a dense khaki head that coats the glass in lacing. A fabulous appearance. The aroma offers hops, roast, pine, chocolate. Nice flavor, though a bit understated for my liking. Both hop and roast characters are lacking in intensity. Residual chocolate and pine notes. Smooth feel with moderately low carbonation. Easy to enjoy a pint, though nothing implores me to order a second serving. Overall, decent beer that has potential for improvement. Worth a try.

12oz bottle. Pretty solid offering, par for the course. Roasty mint tinged chocolate caramel. Balanced and well executed. Deep brown black body, vibrant beige head, pretty steady. Enjoyable, full body. A solid offering, albeit a middle of the road and forgettable beer too. Respectable.

Pours dark brown/black with a medium tan head...nice lacing. Aroma has nice roastiness, dark chocolate, burnt notes, and piney hops. Flavor is very roasty/bitter with pine and mild coffee. Mouthfeel is medium with a roasty/piney bitter finish that lingers nicely.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Deep toasted malt taste with a bit of smokiness to it. Not much of an IPA feel coming through. Tastes more like a slightly bitter porter.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Sample at Perch Pub in Philly, black color, small to medium head and lace. Notes of raosted malts, brown sugar, small amount of hops, grass, and some wood. Not the kind of black ipas I like, lacked the hops, more of a chocolatey, toffee black ipa. Very light mouthfeel with flavors that didn’t linger enough.
