COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Devil’s Milk is an American-style Barley Wine. This beer exhibits a wealth of fruit flavors, from pears to plums to raisins. Devil’s Milk is dry hopped (hops added after fermentation) for a strong bite that balances its big malt backbone. Served in a snifter glass because of the high abv, barley wines are perfect as a relaxing “after-dinner” drink or nitecap.

Served on tap in a chalice glass Appearance – The beer is served a golden amber color with a billowy white head of one finger height. The head has a decent level of retention, fading over time to leave a decent level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is rather large of sweeter aromas of caramel and toffee. Mixed with these smells are some aromas a lightly floral and earthy nature, but these are rather light overall. A moderately strong dark fruit aroma of cherry and fig are there as well a bit of a boozy smell are there as well, creating a rather warming smell overall. Taste – The taste begins with a very sweet and malty taste with plenty of caramel and toffee sweetness matched with a good showing of a bready nature. As the flavor advances some of the fruit flavors that were detected in the nose come to the tongue with some cherry. Along with these sweeter tastes comes a good lot of candied sugar and a bit of some lighter fruit flavors of orange and pear. A bit of hop flavors also come to the tongue more toward the middle and the end with them consisting mainly of a floral and citrus nature. In the end, a light earthy flavor and some light boozy flavors comes to the tongue, leaving a rather sweet and lightly hopped flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel- The beer was on the average side of thickness and creaminess (at least for a brew of ~10.5 % with a carbonation level that is rather low. The low carbonation level is quite appropriate for the brew accentuating the light hop and sweeter flavors of the brew nicely all while the thickness was OK a little bit thicker brew may have accentuated the flavors a bit better. Overall – A very easy drinking Barleywine with lots of sweetness and minimal hop. Not a bad one to try.

Really comes together well. Not a sugar bomb or syrupy mess at all. Powerful, with good balance. Clear amber with good head and lacing. Sweetness and bitterness in finish. Perfect mix of booze, hops and sweet malt. On tap at DC Summerfest.

Draft at Max’s, 2008, 6yrs old. Aroma is sweet malt and dark fruits, taste is similar, not a whole lot going on here since the hops have all faded

Pours from the bottle with a sparkling, clear, almost pinkish medium brown color, but almost no head. The aroma is disappointingly muted, with only a mild grainy sweetness and a light pine character being discernable. The flavor is more forward, with woody hops being balanced against subtly sweet caramel malts. It’s not too boozy or sweet as many barley wines can get, and rather just provides a full balance of flavors. The medium body and light carbonation further help this one from getting too syrupy. Overall, despite being comparatively mellow for a 10% barley wine, the rich flavors one would expect still come through.

Nice dark fruit aroma with some great caramel and malt flavor and a good underlying bitterness. Flavor is a good hoppy bitterness with good raisin and caramel undertones. Does not leave much lingering on the tongue. Overall a solid beer.

My very first Barley Wine, so I do not have a comparison. Nice floral and grassy aroma. Pours medium orange and hazy with a slight head. Initial taste of sweet fruitiness gives way to a slightly bitter finish. Overall a very tasty beer that I would definitely purchase by the case or even keg. At 10.6% abv it packs a little kicks.

UPDATED: MAY 21, 2014 Poured from a bottle into a snifter. Pours a dark reddish brown with a small white head. Aroma is close to that of a port or a sherry wine. Tastes of caramel, dark fruit, citrus, vanilla, and candy sugar. Light bodied, light carbonation, almost an oily feel.

Bottle: Poured a murky brown color ale with a small foamy head with minimal retention and not much lacing. Aroma consists of deep caramelized malt with quite a bit of green hoppy notes. Taste is also a mix between some overly sweet caramelized malt with some stalled green hops that don’t really mix that well with the malt backbone. Body is about average with medium-to-low carbonation and light apparent alcohol. There is something off balanced in this beer that I didn’t particularly enjoyed.
