2009: pours dark ruby/mahogany with a teafroth off-white head. nose is heavy pine, candied plum, brown sugar. flavor is a powerful blend of pine, spicy and sticky sweet hops, brown sugar, raisin, brandy, candied plum, and dark cherry. aftertaste is long, bitter, and even with a nice balance of spicyu hops and brown sugar malt sweetness. visocus, thick, awesome. this is the brew that got me into beer...I thought I had rated it a few years ago, but apparently i didn’t.

Growler at Mike’s place: Deep copper color with a tan film of head. Grainy and buttery aroma. The hops are faded and dank with evident diacetyl formation. Slick and very buttery body as well. Lots of diacetyl presence fades the hops that are there. Butterscotch and subdued grains. Eh.

Bottle from their inaugural bottle batch, shared by Robert at SL. This thing poured a garnet orange color with a decent head and lacing. The aroma was fruity, caramel, some citrus. The flavor followed, fruity (particularly the dark fruits but peaches and pears seemed to be underneath too), caramel, some citrus but finishing with a nice pine bite from some hops. The finish cleaned up a medium to full but sticky/syrupy body with a nice hop (semi-dry) zing. This was an impressive tasting BWine, although not complex. Well done. Thanks, Robert, for sharing!

Growler courtesy of GMCC2181, thanks Gabe. Rating #149. Dark burnt orange color, the head was thin and off-white. Nice hoppy aroma with some caramely malts to support it. Strong hop flavors right up front which also last through the finish and linger on the tongue. A smooth maltiness is lying underneath to add a touch of balance to the overall beer, this is good shit, something I could drink a lot of during these cold SoCal winters. (1089)

Quite a bit of hops in the taste, along with bourbon-like/oak taste taking over. Reminded slightly of Arrogant Bastard. A little overrated IMO.

Draft at Bowie location. Served in a cute little snifter glass. Arrived at the table a light plum color with virtually no head. Well-balanced aroma with quite a bit of grapefruit and pine to offset the rich caramel maltiness and dark fruits. Full-bodied, syrupy, and sticky. The flavor starts off with plenty of sweet caramel, plums, vanilla extract, and some raisins. Lots of grapefruits and pine follow. Dry finish that lingers. Plenty of warming alcohol throughout. I believe this year’s version is 10.5% ABV and uses Amarillo hops. I don’t know what has been used in the past, but this year’s version is noticeably hoppier than I remember.

A deep reddish brown ale with a thin off white head. A good rich caramel malt in aroma , with loads of hops, very vinous notes. In mouth, a rich oily sweet malt with oranges, light grapefruit, marmalade. Rich and smooth barley wine. On tap at Duclaw Baltimore, Dec. 29 2008.

Appearance: Lightly hazy, dark amber body with a short-lived, whitish head.
Smell: Sweet-smelling, candyish malt nose with notes of caramel, fruit, and perfumy alcohol; strong hints of the bold tastes to come.
Taste: Pale, slightly bready malts with plenty of malty sweetness. Quite sugary initially, in fact, though it’s abated by the emerging and accumulative hop bitterness. Flashes of apricot and citrus fruitiness. Then, your palate is awash in spicy, bristly alcohol.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.
Drinkability: Very American and very straightforward in its delivery of brash hop bitterness and ubiquitous alcohol presence.
