3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 gpekar (410) - Maryland, USA - MAR 27, 2010
Poured a clear dark amber color with a short off-white head that reduced to just a film rather quickly. The only negative thing about this beer was a very mild aroma. I detected hints of caramel malt sweetness and some alcohol, but not much else. The taste was night and day compared to the aroma. First, the texture of the beer was thick and creamy with a good hop bite that woke up the taste buds. A nice caramel malt sweetness came through rather well and blended with the hops nicely. There was a good alcohol warmth that came through towards the finish along with a good hop bittterness that lasted well on the palate. This was very good!!
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 alexanderj (2851) - Gilbert, Arizona, USA - MAR 15, 2010
Bottle brought back from MD by my mom. Poured a nice looking amber/auburn color with a very small light khaki head. Aroma of caramel, fruit, citrus, earth, alcohol, with some notes of dry hopping. The flavor on this one really opened up with a bit of warmth; hops then fully shined through. Sweet caramel and fruit, giving way to dry hoppiness; earth and citrus. Alcohol is pretty hidden on this one; could be dangerous. Flavor didn’t blow me away, but it was solid; as was the beer overall.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Chevy Chase Wine, 3/2/10
Aroma: The nose has lots of citrus hops, some caramel malts, some resiny notes, and some booze
Appearance: Pours a clear, dark orange-caramel color with a tiny, bubbly beige head, spotty lace
Flavor: The flavor is pretty hoppy/bitter, some sweet malts for balance, relatively dry
Palate: The body is medium-full, with a syrupy mouthfeel, and a somewhat boozy feel
Overall Impression:
This is my first bottled rating from DuClaw, though I have had a bunch of their brews from the tap at the brewery. I’m glad to see DuClaw brews started showing up in bottles down here, I hadn’t seen them in the area before now. As it breathes, the hops fade from the nose a bit, and it grows boozier, which is interesting. I like the nose either way. The flavors also works pretty well for me, a very solid Barley Wine. This is good brewery, I’d like to see these guys expand their bottling to more beers and more areas, as I am happy to enjoy this brew without having to visit Baltimore to get it.
