3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
This is a powerful beer, but the alcohol is not too intrusive. The colour is a rich coppery amber. Lots of dried fruit in the aroma, with some sherry-like woody notes. More fruit and candy sugar in he flavour, but thereís also plenty of orangey hop presence in the flavour to provide an excellent balance, with touches of toffee and caramel too. Smoot, but relatively light, palate - not too chewy, or too sweet. Dangerously drinkable. DC gathering.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: MAR 10, 2007 Rerate, sampled on tap on 7/14/06 at the RBSG: Has a sweet melon and molten caramel aroma with good hoppy presence and nice complexity. Good, smooth sweet viscous complex and light fruity body has a warming sticky finish. Could use a little more age, but is quite nice.
Hand bottled sampled in Feb. 06: Pours a transparent dark copper with a thin wispy white head. Complex, rich aroma has a sweet gritty caramel presence with a nice fresh piney grapefruity hoppy balance. Body starts with lots of gritty caramel sweet maltiness and a fresh piney hoppy bitterness. Finishes warming and bittersweet. A nice barleywine.

A very solid barley wine. Pretty much all clear, medium-dark orange and copper colored body with a properly thick tan head. First taste is creamy, lush, sweet and rich... smooth. Flavors of rich sticky malts, yeasty candy sugar, plums, cedar wood. Awesome stuff. Rich, sticky and smooth.

Bottle at the RBESG 2011 Grand Tasting, London. Pours clear ruby with a filmy, white head. Old hops in the aroma, with notes of caramel and straight sugar. Very sweet flavor rife with toffee, fruits, malt, caramel. Awesomeish. Full bodied with average carbonation. Mildly warming finish with moderate bitterness, sweet brown sugar and caramel. Very, very good beer.

Thanks to Todd for the í07 hand-bottled bomber! Poured fiery reddish-orange with a short cap of toffee head. The aroma was sweet and intense with darker fruits and caramel on the malt front with spicy, floral, and perfumey hoppage surrounding.. alcohol amplification and really nice balance. The flavor carried through that sweetness, with caramel, honey, and a little grapefruit meat at the core.. spicy and floral bitterness surrounded.. alcohol warmth was apparent, but it never got in the way.. long, strong impression on the finish. Heavier-bodied, warm, and grainy on the palate with enough carbonation to keep it moving.. sticky, hot finish that warmed the belly.. alcohol was held in check as well as you could hope for considering the ABV. Iíd gladly drink this again!

22 ounce bottle courtesy of a free beer contest run by GMCC2181. Thanks! Not sure how old this was when I got it, but Iíve had it 13 months, so its got some age. Also, thought this would be fitting for my 3666th rating. Pours a clear dark strawberry red with a medium tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of toffee, brown sugar, citrus hops. The taste is toffee, brown sugar, berries, citrus, peppery hop notes. Medium-full bodied. The hops have probably faded some, but I like that better anyway. Nice malty barleywine. This has aged well.

Bottle courtesy of slob. Pours amber and slightly carbonated. Smells of lots of plums, oranges, dark fruit, sweet malt. Tastes moderately peppery with a pronounced fruity presence and lots of caramel to back it up. Finish balances out the sweetness nicely with a touch of warming alcohol. Very nice!

Big thanks to GMCC2181 for shipping me this growler! Pours clear copper with thin off white head. The mild aroma is full of citrus hops, spicy to earthy hops and some slick malt sweetness. The taste starts out with smooth earthy to grassy hop flavor and then the bitterness begins to pick up. By midway slick sweet maltiness murmurs up in the background to provide a pleasing level of support for the tasty load of hops. Nice American style Barleywine.
