COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Devil’s Milk is an American-style Barley Wine. This beer exhibits a wealth of fruit flavors, from pears to plums to raisins. Devil’s Milk is dry hopped (hops added after fermentation) for a strong bite that balances its big malt backbone. Served in a snifter glass because of the high abv, barley wines are perfect as a relaxing “after-dinner” drink or nitecap.

Tasted from Growler. Poured a darker and clear mahogany color with a very small sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, citrus, light cherries, and all around hops (very hoppy). Tastes of caramel, some dark fruits, and grapefruit. Light warming alcohol bite in the finish (but not 12+%).

growler courtesy of egadjzis at Richlikebeer’s YEHA ’05. I’ve been waiting a while to try this one. cloudy golden color - doesn’t really look like a barley wine... foamy tan head. strong hop aroma, flavor is whiskey and hop with a malty backbone in the finish. hmm, a west coast barley wine from Maryland? Interesting.

Copper colored body with a good head. Old fruit, cinnamon and brandy make up an enticing aroma, but the beer is thinner than expected.

At RBSG 2006 party at RFD. A hazy amber beer with a lazing orange-beige head. The aroma is lovely sweet hop soup. The flavor is a bit like drinking a cold hop soup with lots of alfa acids and lots of fruit, leading to an end with a note of citrus that lingers for a long time and bit by bit turns dry. This beer is so strongly hoppy, that I find it like a sipping beer.

UPDATED: JUN 6, 2013 A very solid barley wine. Pretty much all clear, medium-dark orange and copper colored body with a properly thick tan head. First taste is creamy, lush, sweet and rich... smooth. Flavors of rich sticky malts, yeasty candy sugar, plums, cedar wood. Awesome stuff. Rich, sticky and smooth.

RBSG 07 red body with little head and no lacing smells like a milky way. Texture was distracting in its oiliness. Sharpe in the finish.

(1L Bottle) Pours a clear amber-brown body with a small beige head. Aroma of citrus, caramel, port, and chocolate. Flavor of hops, sweet caramel malt, and fruit with a somewhat sticky mouthfeel and bitter finish.

Pours with a three-finger thick, light tan colored head that sits atop a brilliantly clear, light cranberry tinged, full amber colored beer. The aroma is a mix of herbaceous hops and ample, concentrated malt. Notes of caramel, brown sugar, boozy-brandied over-tones, toasted grain, syrup-crusted soda crackers make up the malt notes. The hop aromas at times contribute a soft berry-like note to this beer as well as a soft pine-like note and almost even a winter-green character. The malt & hops do combine to give this an aromatic fruit component, but it is only noticeable at times.

Fairly sweet, especially considering that this is not the thickest or richest Barleywine out there. The sweetness accentuates a soft, berry like flavor that runs throughout this beer. A herbaceous hop character is also found in this beer, but becomes the most noticeable note towards the finish where it is something like a mix of resinous pine and rosemary notes. Citrusy hop components play a role here, though somehow the straight-forward malt sweetness turns them into berry like flavors; at times notes of bergamot, tangelo and candied orange peel are quite noticeable. As the beer warms up the candied orange peel flavors become quite a bit more noticeable. A solid bitterness is noticeable from beginning to end, though it does not quite tame the simplistic malt sweetness, but it does make a good attempt.

This certainly hides the alcohol quite well, I never would have guessed it was near 12%, though this would never be mistaken for a light weight. The hop character is still fairly vibrant, and this certainly has not picked up much age or oxidation yet. This beer becomes more enjoyable as time goes on; it has become a fitting beer to end the night on.

UPDATED: SEP 3, 2009 On tap at the Baltimore location. Flickr(http://www.flickr.com/photos/26049401@N0 Very floral cognac and apple nose, touching on sweet pineapple, pear nectar and a bit of guava. Nicely fruity. Pours an amber-orange, with a golden fringe and a thin rim in white. Wet, rotten grain flavor. Loads of isovaleric wet dog and some salty metal. Rather shallow finish. The grain and hop characters aren’t good, even if the yeast and alcohol profiles shine a little. Finishes a touch oaky and with some hop gum. Alcohol levels seem appropriate. Mediocre.
