COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Devilís Milk is an American-style Barley Wine. This beer exhibits a wealth of fruit flavors, from pears to plums to raisins. Devilís Milk is dry hopped (hops added after fermentation) for a strong bite that balances its big malt backbone. Served in a snifter glass because of the high abv, barley wines are perfect as a relaxing ďafter-dinnerĒ drink or nitecap.

Pours from the bottle with a sparkling, clear, almost pinkish medium brown color, but almost no head. The aroma is disappointingly muted, with only a mild grainy sweetness and a light pine character being discernable. The flavor is more forward, with woody hops being balanced against subtly sweet caramel malts. Itís not too boozy or sweet as many barley wines can get, and rather just provides a full balance of flavors. The medium body and light carbonation further help this one from getting too syrupy. Overall, despite being comparatively mellow for a 10% barley wine, the rich flavors one would expect still come through.

UPDATED: DEC 8, 2004 2004 growler @ the gathering. Compliments of Scraff. Aroma of rum, prunes, some light bourbon notes, light toffee, raisins, light wood. Light brown appearance, a bit fizzy, no head ( I also did have the bottom of the bottle, but lots of it). Hazy. Very light caramel flavor, light bourbon, some alcohol. Finish has alcohol, and some nuttiness. High bittering hops apparent. Medium body, rather thin. Hmm, definitely needs more body and some more balance. Reminds me of New Holland Dragonís Milk in that it is surprisingly light on the palate, with a big dose of bourbon that seems too dominant.

On taP in Baltimore: Too sweet! Brown Sugary, malty, caramel, toffee, maple syrup, are among just a few of the many sweet and too sweet flavors. I will say with all of the sweet flavors it could very easily get some one in trouble with its 12% abv. Of course I couldnít get past the overbearing sweetness. Not any semblance of balance. It looks nice enough.

(22oz bottle thanks to ericandersnavy) clear rich copper, sparse bubbles. Nose of coriander, alcohol, caramel, grassy, honey and winter spices. Taste of caramel, hot alcohol fusels, grass with a thinnish body. Not complex, or really very good.

Bottle (RBESGG2011, Grand Tasting)
Sweet malty aroma, a touch mashy. Boring mashy body. Sticky, but nice hoppy finish that tingles with bitterness. Alcohol not too prominant, which is a blessing at this strength. Underwhelmed, though. Perhaps they should have aged this for a year or two before selling it, as the mashiness is just way too young.

Sampled at the St. Louis RB gathering. It poured a clear amber color with no head. The aroma was malt, hops, citrus and bitterness. The flavor was citrus, malt, slight sugar, and bitterness. A very good Barley Wine.

Bottle: Poured a murky brown color ale with a small foamy head with minimal retention and not much lacing. Aroma consists of deep caramelized malt with quite a bit of green hoppy notes. Taste is also a mix between some overly sweet caramelized malt with some stalled green hops that donít really mix that well with the malt backbone. Body is about average with medium-to-low carbonation and light apparent alcohol. There is something off balanced in this beer that I didnít particularly enjoyed.

2005 version: Ok, so this really didnt impress me. Ruby colored, no head, sugar and dried fruit in the nose, sweet flavor, sticky mouthfeel, notes of sugar, some caramel, and some dark fruit, but mostly dominated by sugar. give me an old horizontal over this any day.
