Devilís Milk is an American-style Barley Wine. This beer exhibits a wealth of fruit flavors, from pears to plums to raisins. Devilís Milk is dry hopped (hops added after fermentation) for a strong bite that balances its big malt backbone. Served in a snifter glass because of the high abv, barley wines are perfect as a relaxing ďafter-dinnerĒ drink or nitecap.

Got to try a bottle of this thanks to "hannont". Colour... clear amber with no head. Nose... sweetly caramel-like. Palate... dry and sweet, stone fruity, tropical dried fruits esp. mango and kiwi with plenty of toffee and spice to back it up and a very looooong finish!

UPDATED: JAN 12, 2006 12/30/2005 On draught with pailhead: Mostly clear yellow-redish amber with a very well retained eggshell head. The aroma is quite hoppy all the way through, fresh citrus, earthy/grassy, and leafy green hops, light malt, dusty grain (not in a bad way). Taste is fresh hops, earthy & leafy hops, sweet apples, light sugary malt, mild caramel, quite bitter. Finish is bitter, not at all sticky or syrupy, with plenty of retronasal hops. Nice English-style barleywine here in both hops and malt, unless Iím totally wrong. This one will age beautifully too. 1/12/2006: Ok same beer but Iím almost certain I was totally wrong on the fuggles. So rather than try to be perfect Iíll correct myself here. The hops seemed to have a bit of a fruity/citrus quality to them with a bit of leafy green hops maybe, but not the distinct fuggles I was smelling last time. Seems itís american hops and not an English barleywine at all. Stay tuned for the next time I go back and contradict myself again.

Bottle (handbottled) courtesy of brothers Styles and Pailhead. Pours a clear, ruby orange color with an attractive off-white head which slowly fades to a nice sized ring. Good lacing is left behind. Aroma is pleasantly malty, lightly fruity and moderate floral hop notes. Medium bodied and quite smooth with a lower carbonation level. I donít know if that was intended or a byproduct of the handbottling, either way it seems to work well with this beer. Flavors are malty sweet initially with a touch of raisin and caramel and midway through changes to a piney, sappy hop bitterness. The 12% is tucked away nicely, little bits of alcohol are picked up and it warms the belly but it blends quite well. Very nicely done.

Aroma of sweet spruce and citrus hops. Pours a medium brown color with a small white head. Taste is dominated by citrus hops, pine, caramel sweetness, and the perfect amount of alcohol warmth. Mouthfeel is smooth and full-bodied with low carbonation. This is an outstanding barley wine - one of my favorites. Very enjoyable.

20090207 Tap at Bel Air location. A beast of a barleywine. Iím sure Iíve had this a few times before at gatherings or whatnot, but this is the first time Iíve had it fresh and itís better than I remembered. And fresh it was with sturdy, sweet malts, biting, intense hops, and lingering alcohol burn. Strong stuff!

Bottle at the RBESG 2011 Grand Tasting, London. Pours clear ruby with a filmy, white head. Old hops in the aroma, with notes of caramel and straight sugar. Very sweet flavor rife with toffee, fruits, malt, caramel. Awesomeish. Full bodied with average carbonation. Mildly warming finish with moderate bitterness, sweet brown sugar and caramel. Very, very good beer.
