COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Devil’s Milk is an American-style Barley Wine. This beer exhibits a wealth of fruit flavors, from pears to plums to raisins. Devil’s Milk is dry hopped (hops added after fermentation) for a strong bite that balances its big malt backbone. Served in a snifter glass because of the high abv, barley wines are perfect as a relaxing “after-dinner” drink or nitecap.

Thanks to Eric, this is the third time he’s tried to get a growler of this to a gathering I was attending and it was the charm. A sweet, mild, caramelly, syrupy ale with an ever so slight alcohol burn on the lips. The hops are mild, soft, slightly spicy (nutmeg, cinnamon), and the malts are dark, with figs, oxidized apples, and plenty of toffee. And excellent sipper that leaves your lips and entire mouth feeling indulged, sticky, and smooth, with a gentle nearly-floral aftertaste.

Pours with little head, nice light copper color.very drinkable barleywine. Low bitterness on the front head with pleasant aroma on the finish. Tastes very pleasant green reminds me of the ganj, or so I’ve been told ;) I could drink several of these in one sitting. As a barleywine, this one is a bit lacking in body and malt for some BA’s but I will definitely pick up more of this next time I visit friends in DC.

Bottle @ RBESG 2011 Grand Tasting at Dean Swift. Sweetish beer. Some candied tangerine fruit. It’s ok. Not outstanding. Quite decent. by the book barley wine.

Bottle at the RBESG 2011 Grand Tasting, London. Pours clear ruby with a filmy, white head. Old hops in the aroma, with notes of caramel and straight sugar. Very sweet flavor rife with toffee, fruits, malt, caramel. Awesomeish. Full bodied with average carbonation. Mildly warming finish with moderate bitterness, sweet brown sugar and caramel. Very, very good beer.

2012.02.22 - On tap at Always Ron’s. Light to medium copper color. Very sticky head which stays wherever it has touched. Taste is pretty good, seems like a quite hoppy flavor yet smooth and controlled, not overbearing.

Coles Barleywine Competition 2012. Copper colored pour. Decent flavor of rich malts, light dark fruits. Carbonation seems somewhat off. Tobacco notes, somewhat harsh finish

Pours cloudy brown with little to no head at all. Aroma is caramel malts, brown sugar, dry fruits and vanilla. Flavor is not quite what I was expecting from the aroma. light caramel malts, wood and brown sugar. Light bodied with little to no carbonation.

Bottle shared by John at STL RB gathering. Pour is light brown with almost no head. Aroma is a strange combo of maple syrup and raw pumpkin with hints of brown sugar and light spice. Flavor is very buttery with hints of sweet malt and light bitterness followed by a sugar smooth finish. Not bad, but not quite as bold as expected.
